I can't seem to be able to find the thread concerning engine oil for the CRD and as I recall it was a bit too long anyway so....

1) Best brand synthetic for CRD?
2) Best weight? I have seen 0W-40W recommended but 5W-40W is more commonly available.
Recommendations/experiences?

* While we're on this subject, is there a better oil for the transfer case? Perhaps one that allows easier & quicker shifting between 2 & 4wd?
* Differential lube?
* Tranny oil?

Jeep says Mobil1 0w40 full Syn. with 5-40 as an alternate. I use 5-40 Rotella-T full synthetic (wallmart carries the gallon jugs). There appears to be unbiased evidence that amsoil exceeds the performance of most other full synthetics, but you pay a little more for it.

Even if I wasn't a dealer I would tell you to try Every Amsoil lube in your vehicle. They make the best lubes and they are worth the little extra they cost and if you take advantage of just double your normal change interval they pay for themselves in the long run and you get superior protection.

Check out their Severe Gear line for your diffs and their full synthetic transmission oil for your transfer case and trans.

Thanks guys! I have heard a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting the Amsoil was a good pick. I have had trouble finding it but saw some in GI Joe's this evening. I don't mind paying an extra 10 bucks on oil.
Is the 0W vs 5W much of a difference? I assume this really only matters at startup.

I use Rotella-T Synthetic 5w-40. The dealer doesn't even care either, I just put it on the passenger seat.

Another Rotella 5w40 vote. I just hate shopping at Wal Mart.

A month or two ago I was in a NAPA in another town and saw a new Valvoline 5w40 diesel oil in a blue gallon bottle, labeled with the blurb "developed with Cummins for use in high-tech diesel engines." I thought it said $13.50 a gallon on the shelf, but it may have been mislabeled. Of course, my local NAPA has never heard of it. I'd like to give it a try if I can find it at a similar cost to the Rotella.

Price and one of only a hanful of 5w40 diesel oils available. I've had a hard time finding Mobil 1 5w40, and I am not crazy about the 0w40 (which I think adds to the sludge woes in our CCV system).

My dislike for shopping at Wal Mart has more to do with the mob scene/chaos at the store, and a preference for supporting local businesses that pay a living wage.

I just got it changed yesterday. I found a shop in town that sold Amsoil so I had them change the engine oil, the rear differential oil and the air filter all for $110. Which I think was a pretty good deal. I would still like to do the front diff but it will take more time because of the skid plates. I would also like to do the transfer case with Amsoil but this may be a larger project.....and since my workshop consists of a gravel parking lot covered with slush, I'm not in too much of a hurry..... :?

Im using the 0W instead of the 5W right now. Cant tell a difference at all. I extended my drain interval to 8000 miles instead of the normal 6000. They say that depending on your vehicle you can stretch your drain interval a lot. Oh, and all my fluids are Amsoil, great products!

Did you get the EAA201 drop in filter from Amsoil ? Not a bad price incl. labor. (even though I do service for free for my local customers :wink:)

Yes, I thought it was a pretty darned good deal since it included the air filter, rear diff, oil, filter etc... But, they are relatively new and trying to build a customer base.
The filter is just a crappy NAPA filter I will replace in a few months. I was in a hurry (I had no idea how long it had been since the oil had been changed by the last owner), plus there are some people using much larger filters than the dinky ones speced so I was going to do more research into whether or not larger ones are worth it. (I think they are Wix??)
I will do the front diff and transfer case myself because it would have taken much more shop time.....

just curious...does anyone consistently use the mobil 5w40 for turbo diesel trucks and what are your opinions on this? is it just a marketing gimmick or does it actually perform a little better than other oils?

I went with Mobil 1 TTD 5W40 about 1K miles ago. starts good, runs good. Too soon to tell if this is the ideal oil for me in southern California but I expect to use it in the future . May do an oil analysis but that would be 5K mi off from now. Certainly a good oil.

I only use Royal Purple 15w-40 and it work good engine run very smooth . I am in Florida so the 15w is ok, Personally i do not care for the 5w.

I've only used Mobil Delvac 1 5-40 in both my CRD and VW TDI. I buy it from the local distributor by the case. I change oil and filter at 10K in the VW and 8-10K in the CRD. I have almost 200K miles on the VW and it uses about a quart between changes. The CRD has about 45K miles and seems to be using less between changes. I've used Shell Rotella T in my tractor for many years and may have started with their synthetic version if it had been widely available. I don't think the synthetic composition and diesel rating common to these expensive oils is a gimmick. I personally would never use anything other than one of the top tier diesel rated synthetic oils, why take the risk? I also don't think the 0-40 oil is a good idea especially since I've never had a bit of trouble starting in cold weather. Maybe if I lived in the northwest territory.

Even though I feel Mobil Delvac 1 is a fine oil, I'm thinking of switching oil and filters to Amsoil if I can come anywhere near the price. Enough of my money goes to companies like Exxon/Moibil/Shell. I'm especially interested in the Amsoil air and oil filters.

I've always been planning on adopting an extended oil drain interval but feel getting under and looking things over every few months is a good way to spot problems early.
