T-case, Fron & Rear Diff fluid change

I went to the dealer and asked about a T-case fluid change, they said it is 199.00 to do because it is part of the drive line system.
I have done front and rear diff fluid change be jiffy lube a few times. Does that change the t-case fluid as well or is that something else?

My question is, when I do the front and rear diffs, does the t-case get changed too?

Nope, you have to tell them to do them all. I can check when I get home and tell you the price I was charged at Jiffy Lube. I had them change everything to Synthetic at my first oil change after I bought the Jeep. They use Castrol Synthetic which after doing some research I would not use again. PLEASE don't make this an oil thread, I'm just telling him what they use.

Anyway, each oil change is separate so you'll ned to tell them. I trust the Jiffy Lube that I use and they let me hang out in the garage while they are doing the work so I can see what they are doing. As an fyi the synthetic at Jiffy Lube is not kept in the large overhead tanks, they will take it from 1qt bottles, if you see them filling it with a house from the ceiling they are not putting in synthetic.

I'm pretty sure my oil, oil filter and front, rear and center T case changed to synthetic was close to $200. That price was in Brooklyn, NY the shop was on 4th Ave around 32nd Street? I'll look for the receipt tonight and let you know the exact price.

so jiffy lube will do the t-case for me? I never asked them before. only the diffs

The dealer told me that DC can only do it.

That's outrageous! $200 for a t-case change. Go buy 2 qts of Valvoline ATF+4 and all you have to do is drain and refill. Very easy to do. Save yourself $180. The front and rear is different from the t-case. I wouldn't trust a Jiffy Lube in my lifetime. I would change it again. I use a 75w140 front and rear. Get 4 quarts. Front has a drain hole and a fill hole. Rear you got to take the cover off and use a gasket or red RTV. No drain hole.

$200 isnt a real bad price for the front+rear diff and tcase. The case and the front diff have a drain plug so its easier to change the oil in those than in the engine.

edit: WOW, I missed that it was $200 for JUST the tcase?! Good gosh! It has a drain+ fill plug. All it takes is 3 quarts of mopar ATF+4 from walmart, an allen wrench, and 30min tops to change the oil in it. A lower unit pump for a boat engine really helps with filling it back up.

2 qts full syn atf and a pump will only cost at most about $40 and only take about 30 mins TOPS to do. WTH are they charging that much $$ for on a t-case change?!?

jiffy lube charged me $90 for front / rear diff including t case.

Do it yourself, takes no time at all, just a 8 mm allen wrench i believe, a pump and 2 maybe 3 quarts i forgot. It's not worth $200 at all.

remember too...there's simply draining and refilling it and then theres, taking off the housing, cleaning everything out with cleaner, and putting it back together with fresh fill. Also, don't forget there is a filter for the tranny should you decide to do that switchover. New filters and new fluid there. Flushing out the tranny is different than dropping the pan, changing the filter (s) and resealing and filling. just a heads up. most of the quickie lube places cut all kinds of corners, I bet they aren't taking off the diff housing and cleaning everything out, removing the old sealant (gasket) and putting it back together...something tells me they drain and refill. nothing more.

i remember seeing the sign that 4wd service was 200 at the dealer, I was wondering if that included adjusting the chain inside too?

but yes, you can change your t-case fluid for about 10 dollars

only DaimlerChrysler can service the NP/NV231...so I guess that's why I see so many Rangers and Bronco II's at Mopar dealerships :lol:

I wonder if only Mopar can also do the transfer case fluid changes on an Explorer or a transmission fluid exchange on a Taurus...that's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. IIRC they also can't deny your warranty if you have somebody else perform the maintenance on your car.

LOL what kind of specialized tools which are IMPOSSIBLE for everyone except DC to manufacture does the transfer case oil change require???

I'm stumped at what dealerships will say to keep the customers in check!

When I took my Toyota Prius for it's last free oil change, I was told by the service tech that only Toyota dealers could change the oil on that car. When I asked him why, he said techs need to wear customized protective clothing and they have to use special insulated equipment. I just had to laugh when he said that. Been doing my own oil changes with my regular tools on it for years now.

Seriously, it's not that difficult to change your own oil, diff, and t-case fluids. Even the tranny fluid is no that hard, just a bit time consuming. If you have a garage, I highly suggest you give it a shot. I used to be scared to do any of that stuff myself. Now, I haven't seen a dealer in years. It's actually kind of fun and you know exactly what fluids you're getting.

OK. I found the bill and here’s what I was charged. I’d love to know if you all think I was over charged at all. These prices are from Jiffy Lube (862 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY) and keep in mind the price for auto work in the NYC are might be more than say it would be in no where USA.

Total Price was $240.80 and $260.97 with the tax for the following:

All oil was synthetic

So there you have it. What do you think? Did I over pay? Like I mentioned, I was in the garage when they did the work and saw them drain the oil from everything.

Oh, and yes, I could change my own oil and it would certainly save me some money however, I’ve read a few stories about people who have had blown engines or had anything go wrong and when they weren’t able to produce the receipts for their oil changes the companies would deny the warranty and say they didn’t do the regular service. So for a few extra bucks I’d rather have the extra comfort of knowing I have receipts to all the work I’ve had done to the Jeep. It’ll also make it easier to sell when (and if I ever) sell her.
