This is a great site. I have spent days now just reading.
It is time to change the fluid in my transmission. I have the 42rle. In a Dakota that I used to own I would adjust the transmission bands when changing the fluid. Does the 42rle also have adjustable bands? If so does anyone have the torque specs to adjust them to? Are there any online service manuals?
Thanks in advance.
Will

as i understand it, no bands to adjust, they are self-learning and it will shift roughly for a few days after a fluid change as the computer re-learns

Thanks for the reply. Going to try and get the fluid changed tonight. I always dread changing the fluid in the auto tranny.

Not sure why my signature didn't show up.

Thanks again.

no prob, I think mine shifted "normally" again after about three or four days...if you go to the dealer, ask them to put it on "quick'learn" mode, that will make it relearn faster, otherwise just wait it out

i dont even remember mine shifting that hard after i changed mine. i couldnt get the pan all the way off though one blot i just couldnt get anything on it i didnt try that hard though i just let it drain really good. i was suprized at how easy the filter was to get to though. try changing a land rovers  or the whole tranny for that matter. not fun!!! i just did a swap for my buddy and it was a pain but i runs great now! oh and i would change the xfer case while u were at it since its the same fluid and all. its really easy to do. thats just what i do

wmonroe... just make sure you get the right tranny filter. I purchased the kit with gasket from Napa, drove 30 minutes to my buddy who has a lift and found out after dropping the pan that the filter in the box was incorrect. Two Napas and two Advance Autos both told me it was the correct one and unless I had a tranny in my Renegade out of some base model (one guy going as far as telling me the dealership must have just installed a light bar for me and I don't have a real Renegade) I finally had to drive another 30 minutes to a Jeep delaership to pick up the correct filter. The parts guy was laughing as he opened a few filter boxes behind the counter because he was curious to see what I had and it ended up being for the Durango or some Dodge truck. When I returned the filter to Napa they still swore that thats the one they have been selling for years for the liberty. Other than that it was very straight forward.

Is it just the 42rle that does that, or do stock 45rfe's do it too? I get my transmission and transfer case fluids changed regularly and don't get that. Doesn't putting it in "quick learn" mode just clear the adaptives? I would think you could just disconnect the battery, turn the ignition just to power up the electronics, turn it back to off, and reconnect the battery. I know it works with the early KJ's to reset the engine computer so it relearns over the next 50 (I think) warm up cycles.

Can't speak for the 45, no experience with it. I tried the battery disconnect, didn't work for me....just plain old lived-with-it for a few days and it "re-learned"

Thanks for all the help. The fluid change went smoothly. Had to go to a dealer to get the filter, none of the local parts stores around here had a 42rle filter only the 45rfe. They all tried to tell me that is what tranny I had because "the computer says so". I was surprised by how small of an amount of metal "stuff" was stuck to the magnet. I have changed the fluid in a few other auto trannies and have always had more on the magnet. I guess that means my tranny is doing well.
