I’m pretty sure everything was Castrol synthetic. I believe the gear oil 80/90 was for the Transfer case. But I’m not really sure.

T-case is the ATF. You got an auto trans or manual?

It's an auto, part and full time 4x4 option. I think you're right that the ATF was for the transfer case so now I'm not sure what the 80/90 gear oil was for.

Where did they put that? :?

Any idea what kind/brand of "synthetic" gear oils they used?

my guess is thats just a generic list of things that come up with the special, and covers multi vehicles and some T-cases do take Gear lube, so they just put whatever is needed in. Its just a shady way of writing a bill to me.

Probably right but 1 qt for any trans or transfer case sounds low.
The cost sounds reasonable for all the was done if they did in fact do all of it. I have heard too many stories of people being charged for services that were never performed. There have been too many sting operations on these places too for me to ever trust them. Hopefully that isn't the case where you went and all is good.

I think the “quantity 1” can also mean it was done. Part of the bulk package included a chassis lube which covered the doors, locks, hatch etc and that showed “quantity 1” as well. I didn’t put it in there b/c I was already typing too long. Part of the service also includes checking the brake lines, battery level and a few other things.

The only thing I don’t let Jiffy Lube do is re-fill the wiper fluid. In the summer time it’s no bid deal but their fluid is so diluted that when the temp get’s around to around 20 it will freeze in the bottle. That’s one more reason why I stay in the garage with them while they work on the car. I’ve found as long as you’re not telling them how to do their job and getting in the way they are OK with it. Some places however have strict rules for insurance reasons that customers can’t be in the garage.

I’m glad to hear from at least one person who thought the price was fair. At the next oil change I ended up changing out the transmission fluid too so I’ll write up what the bill was for that under a separate post. It was about 30,000 miles before the oil needed to be changed but the fluid was very dirty and I figured I was better safe than sorry.

Thats a pretty good deal scooby for all that. As long as you can sit there and WATCH them change the oil and use the correct oil, its ok to let them do all of that.

Did you get the filter changed on the tranny too? My fluid was nice and red at 30k but Im fairly easy on the tranny. The tcase was kinda dark at 30k though.

I have not done the KJ yet but have done other vehicles.

The t-case is the easiest to do. It has a fill and a drain plug. 2 quarts of Mopar atf+4 are about $3.95 each at wallymart or Autozone. That's about $8.00 right now. Even if you never did it before it is a 1 hour or less job taking your time. .......The Dealers scare everyone with bs and make you think it's an ancient chineese secret or somehting.

The front diff also has a fill and drain plug. You have to drop your skid to get at it better. I didn't price the gear oil.

The rear diff is more of a PIA as you have to take off the cover but that makes you check out your gears and wipe out the bottom in case there's any metal fileings in there. The red rtv is a pain but it is not hard. You just have to clean it up real good first.

Who really knows what jiffy lube really puts in? I'll bet you anything they do not use atf+4.

I hate to see people get taken advantage of.

don't quote me on this, but it probably doesn't matter what kind of ATF they put in the T-case.

and Gear lube for Synthetic is usually around $7/qt give our take a buck or 2 for brand (all are better than used Oil)

So 4-5 bottles of Gear lube ~ $35
2 Qts ATF ~ $8
1 tube of Grey RTV ~$5

Total for yourself is about $50 bucks, more if you have to buy the tools, which even with the tools its still cheaper than $200 , especially if you have the room and the time.

I believe that you have to use ATF+4 for the transfer too. Also remember if you have factory limited slip in the diff you need to use a friction modifier additive. (OT-shouldnt that be de-modifier? makes it sound like it'll creat more friction......)

If you know how to change oil on a car or even know how to operate an allen wrench, save your self the money and do it yourself. Plus it gives you a better knowledge of your Jeep. So take an hour or so and have some quality one on one time with your baby. lol

later,
mike

When I took my Toyota Prius for it's last free oil change, I was told by the service tech that only Toyota dealers could change the oil on that car. When I asked him why, he said techs need to wear customized protective clothing and they have to use special insulated equipment. I just had to laugh when he said that. Been doing my own oil changes with my regular tools on it for years now.

Hahaha, thats a good one. Its amazing what kinda crap dealers can cook up.
