I was in Colorado for a while and they started adding Ethanol to oxygenate the fuel i.e. reduces smog during the winter months but kills the mileage - it has a lower BTU content even at fairly low concentrations it has an impact.

That I've heard of, though it's not done in my neck of the woods.

They do that in NY also. We get 10% Ethanol in the winter and it does reduce your gas mileage. That and the cold. The jeep is bad but I also notice a gas mileage drop difference in the car too.

MPG..well I know my average is around 16-17 but when you are cruising down a mountain at 95 the computer says 99 mpg but that is solely due to coasting, lol. Yes I make my jeep go fast and slow.

I have a Borla catback and that did not really change anything. I also have some larger tires and that did not really change anything. Hell I even have that stupid torando air system with a K&N filter and that hardly did anything. I have heard that a lift does drop you in mileage though however only 1 or 2.

I live in NW chicago suburbs and I haven't seen non- ethanol gas in at least 10 years. Summer or winter, it's all we get.
Only mod I've done is a cold air intake and I average 15-16 mpg 20 mile r/t to work & back (av speed 40 mph).

I get 6 inches to the gallon.
Well it seems like that these days.

I have stock air and exaust. I hav added a lift and put on mob rims with 245/75/16x8 and I actually have a slight increas in MPG's. I also had BFG AT/KO's on before the lift and moab wheels they were 51 lbs each and I had 5. I now have firestone dest at's and they weigh in at 30 lbs. so I actually am about AVG with MPG's I get about 17 MPG's

I have done that (but not at 95 - maybe 75) and mine read 99.9mpg. It is good amusement.

I believe the biggest mileage killer during cold weather is the viscosity of all the lubricants. The motor oil and differential fluids are all thick as honey when it's cold out and require added horsepower to overcome the resistance. Switching to synthetic motor oil and gear oil might help some. The transmission and transfer case also take a while to warm up but you've already got synthetic ATF in those.

it weighs 4,200 lbs plus, has a torquey 12v V6, and a REAL 4wd system. I'm surprised stock KJs get gas mileage as good as they do. It's not like it's built like a CRV or Escape that weighs 1,000 pounds less and have revvier, less torquey engines.

I drive an 05 automatic 3.7 and I get just over 18 miles to the gallon. I don't use a CAI but I do run a Flowmaster off road super 44 muffler. I am installing a lift and some 31s this week so it will go down but 18 isn't so bad for the last 34,000 miles that I've put on it since I got it.

I noticed an improvement when I replace the K&N air filter and installed a ScanGuage series 1 which when showing MPG keeps my foot lighter on the skinny pedal. Then doing the PVC pipe inlet to the air box helped also. I also have a MagnaFlo muffler ,but had it installed within the first week of ownership so I can not attest to milage improvement with the muffler. But it sounds good.

Throtle body spacers are waste of money...

Save that money and use it for gas.

+ 1.5 MPG with a CAI

+1-2 MPG with Magnaflow.

-1 MPG going to larger 245/70/16 At tires

-1 MPG with cargo basket/fairing and heavy side steps (60 pounds)

I now am consistently across the board getting 20 MPG. Best is 21 MPG worst is 19. I do 95% highway driving, so that makes a huge difference as well.

I would agree that highway driving helps but here in Vegas it is always stop and go...much like downtown Chicago.

Okay, just filled up again:

I have been experimenting with shift points with the 6-spd. For two tanks of almost exclusive urban/suburban driving, I got 19.2 & then 19.4 mpg with almost no interstate driving. I have a recent plug/air cleaner r&r, but the thing is----- I have been shifting at 1600 RPMs! And not going over 2000 RPM's! I figured that the advantage of the diesel was torque at low rpms. But the 3.7 is torquey enough to pull its own weight at those RPMS, just maybe not pull a trailer too. So, why not duplicate the RPM range of my '93 CTD? I would often skip gears and start in 2nd when feasable during this experiment. I often went 2-4-6 exclusively.

When I had to go on the highway, I set the cruise at 65 MPH.

Gawd, was this boring. But it did yield some decent MPG numbers.

19+ MPG city for my little porklette of a Jeep made me berry, berry happy. But it is not worth altering my driving style this drastically on a regular basis. Yet. To repeat: Gawd, was this boring. Those Hyper-miler folks must find the annual PBS fundraising drive exciting.
