Unfortunately, I need to make the my first out-of-warranty trip to the dealer tomorrow and am preparing myself to open my wallet, quite wide I'm sure. Maybe somebody can help me out with this question though. This is the second time this situation has happened.

Today, I got a check engine light as I was driving down the road so I went to an Autozone (since I don't have a Scangauge) and had them hook up to the car. The engine light was clearly on, but the OBD tool said that there were no codes present (go figure). I have heard before that there are some "dealer specific" codes that might not be able to be read by a generic scan tool and was wondering if this was true? Also, for anyone who has had a similar situation (engine light and no codes), what was the final diagnosis as I am trying to wrap my head around this one.

In addition, the last time this happened about 9K miles ago, it was the EGR, so hopefully I can rule that one out.

Did you try the key trick?

Anyways, try another code reader. It should definitely pull the code.

also if the error cleared itself - and some will - the light won't go out for 3 engine cycles.

Memory Refresh:

If there were any codes, they'd appear, instead of the dashes and "d0nE"

Cool! Never saw that video before. I will try that out soon on the CRD. I think I tried it before but not as fast as that guy on the video.

It works, all be it makes me feel really bad doing that to the ignition switch.

Now I however am upset, I expected to get one error code, landed up with a short shopping list.

well I thought I would keep everyone updated, but it turns out that the EGR valve and MAF sensor both failed (yes, in only 6000 miles) and the same problem I had before has ocurred. This time the dealer needed to clean the entire induction system to the tune of $580. Am I furious...yes very since the car is only 3k out of warranty. And the real kicker- when I contacted Chrysler to tell them I didn't feel I was responsible for the entire bill they said there was nothing they could do. I believe myself that I should pay for some and even told them that. (not one of those people simply looking for a freebie). but to not even offer to help with part of the bill really shows there dedication to customer relations.

EGR was replaced 9000 miles ago and they didn't warranty that work?
MAF cheapiee there. EGR is the big cost.
Apparently you must be running stock mode there?
My EGR and AFC were replaced at 23,000 miles. Both are still like
new now because of the scientific login that I have gained on
this forum.
LOL.
SEGR protection. EGR ain't there nomo.

crd liberty,

perhaps I should say that at 33K the egr and MAF sensor was replaced. Now, at 39K the same problem has returned. After some minor debating, the dealer was nice enough to say they would cover the EGR valve since that had such a short life span, so the it is not really the dealer I am going after. I tried to go after Chrysler though because I still have to pay the dealer the labor to swap out the valve, and in addition clean out the entire induction system which I think should have been done when it was under warranty anyway. I even played fair and said that I understand I should get charged something since the warranty is technically out, but think they should at least help with the bill, because it's not like I'm complaining about the same problem that happened 20K down the road. We're only talking a couple of thousand miles and just barely out of warranty. Someone correct me if you think I am wrong, but that's my opinion.

You have a 2005, don't you have the 7/70 drive train warranty. Thought that would be covered.

do a search on SEGR or the no cost ORM. should prevent the EGR from failing down the road.

bugnout,

I do have the 7/70 but unfortunately chrysler won't cover the EGR - they don't consider it part of the powertrain

I owe you thanks. I never could get the trick to work in my 03 CRD. Now it works fine and throws a P 1685 invalid key.

I guess if it breaks, it's not part of the powertrain. How, exactly, does their warranty literature define "Powertrain"?

My impression is it includes the engine (no subsytems like alternator, starter, emissions), ECM, transmission and drivetrain. Don't quote me on that though.

man, I wish I had your dealer! My dealer's description was for powertrain was "any part that moves the car forward". I guess that means they look at it as an emission part.
