I do not believe they are necessary or even reliable. The chips are more reliable than some of the components; adding socket connections create more opportunities for long term failures. If you wish to install them, get the machined version with gold contacts -- they aren't cheap, but anything less is junk.

I agree with this if the box would be in the engine compartment and exposed to the elements. However, with a decent quality socket, a box installed in the interior, and a good coating of DeOxit on the metal contact bits, and I think it would be fine. I've seen lots of chips with high-impedance inputs socketed. Point taken though...

The box can be removed from the harness at any time, and replaced with a jumper plug to restore EGR function. But you still have to splice in the harness to the ECM, there is no getting around it. Unless you run a connector company and can engineer tooling to mold custom connectors that sandwich to the ECM.

(can you say expensive?)

...and as someone pointed out in the SEGR thread, all these extra connectors (probably using non-factory wiring colors) would likely be more noticeable than a few simple splices behind the harness cover.

I'm new to LOST KJs, though I've been lurking for awhile. Bought my wife a CRD at the beginning of the year. This machine gives a good balance of capability, torque, economy, ruggedness, torque, price, and torque. Did I mention the torque?

Time for more torque, and to extend the life of this machine as much as possible.

Is the current cost $75? If so, please sign me up!

Please email me on how/when/who to pay.

Thanks!

Has anyone posted about this thread to the "other" KJ forums?

The last run came in at $85 shipped. I am expecting this run to be the same. I will place you on the list, please advise if you want off.

You got it Trevor.

griznhoney, you would be purchasing a kit from me. You could then either build it yourself or get UFo to do it for a fee.
