So I love my libby don't get me wrong but i have been thinking about buying a wrangler now for awhile. I will be keeping the liberty and also getting the wrangler. I was wondering what was a good year and model what kind of features to look for. I know I want a soft top and want it to be yellow preferably a rubicon so i can take the moabs and put it on the liberty once i order the 4in lift. Idk how much I want to do to it yet but im sure a lift and everything will be down the road for now I really want it to be able to take the top off and also be able to do a little bit more of the tricky trails that libby can't quite do. Any and all ideas welcome and wanted.

Thanks guys

a rubicon would be sweet! are you going for auto or stick? i think in 04 or 05 they switched to the 6 speeds for stick. and i think 99 or 2000(before the rubicon) the 3 speed autos were replaced with 4-speed autos. otherwise i dont think really too much changed in the tj's. im not sure on the years of changes for that stuff, but i figured id throw that out there so u knew what to look for

if it were me and had to pick between the 2 (i would drive either) i would go w/ the rubi. since u said u wanted it to wheel better than the KJ it seems prety clear on that. i wheel w/ a Rubi all the time that has a skyjacker lift and MTRs and that thing is sweet!!! im sure if u get it u wont be disappointed. heck if u are i would take it off ur hands  the lockers and D44s are what makes that TJ so nice in my opinion.

I also think a TJ is a good choice. Just make sure you don't get a Dana 35 rear diff. Oh, you can upgrade it with a $1200 mod, but I'd either get a 2001-2006 with a D44, or a 03-06 rubi (in that order). (with the non rubi, you can select what lockers you want yourself, rather than what DCX put in. and no, I've never wheeled a rubi)

Rubicon 6 speed (I think most people like the autos better for wheelin though. I've always preferred the stick in order to be a little more in control.)

I have an '02 TJ with the 3 speed auto and the dana 44
slap a detroit in the rear and an ARB up front a BB and 32 and wheel with the best of them

Cheeper than a rubi and just as good

the TJ unlimiteds are pretty cool too, i like the regular wranglers and the unlimiteds equally, but i prefer the extra room in the unlimited

We have both..........
Mine is a '06 TJ Rubi w/auto tranny and his is a '05 LJ Rubi w/6sp manual.

We like both of them, but his does have that little extra room when we take the dog :)

an new unlimited won't have the same bolt pattern as a your liberty, not that thats a big deal, but just thought i'd point it out since you mentioned switching the rims.

A completely stock TJ or JK(even without rubicon package) will just blow away the KJ offroad. You would be pretty surprised and impressed with what it can do stock.

I wore out a '92 Wranger and my wife drives a 97 TJ. Didn't have much trouble with either one of them. OK mileage and they drive and ride like a Jeep. I have done a lot of 4x4 in the desert with both of them. They both served me well.

You'll miss the KJ hatch back and the 4 doors. That's the main thing.

My .02 worth.

I wheeled with a jk 4 door and it got highcentered WAY more then my renny. It had a 3 inch lift and larger tires. I dont think you were thinking a 4 door anyways, but just in case

well, i never compaired stock, but...

06 KJ with Frankenlift, skids, and 32" MT's vs. 06 LJ with 2.5" OME lift, skids, and 32" MT's on the same trail in KY; the LJ high centered on "the shovel" (a.k.a. the transfer skid) while the KJ drove right up. '06 ESP, while evil on the road, out performs the LSD on the LJ hands down (the LJ is about to get a front locker to help that problem  )

All in all, I enjoyed wheeling the KJ more than the LJ to date. Now give me a older TJ where I can afford to drop $ into a 6" long arm kit, some 35's, detroits and maybe some 4.88's or higher and you've got a bonzer of a trail rig - just not to good as a DD.

Click on over to www.jkowners.com and see both 2 door and 4 door JKs in action and look at all of the aftermarket options available.

I agree, Ive seen both a stock rubi and a stock liberty offroad and I didnt think the rubi did much better than the kj. If the kj had lockers it would of gone just as many places.

I know for a fact that a stock kj does better than a stock tj(non rubi). That was the big thing when the kj first came out, it was better than the tj offroad. Then they brought the rubi out.

I am a hard-core enthusiast of the YJ's: '92 thru '95, but since you're talking Rubicons, I'd go with any year - '04 thru '06. They are sweet, extremely durable, and you gotta love OE lockers.

Good luck with your choice... I'm green with envy!!

Don't underestimate the KJ. In recent outings my KJ first outdid a stock FJ although the FJ was dealt clearance issues when the owner added rock sliders and a massive brush guard and front skid plate. He has since lifted it. On the next outing my KJ outperformed a stock wrangler. Granted my KJ has a mild lift. The traction control made the major difference over the stock Wrangler X (the Green one).

Go for the Rubicon. It's just hard to beat locking Dana 44's front and rear and the lower ratio transfer case. My neighbor has an '06 Rubi Unlimited that he bought with a 4 inch lift and runs 12.50 x 33 MT/R's. The thing is a mountain goat (the Black/Yellow). The extra space for whatever gear you carry is a big plus. He traded in his regular TJ for the Rubi after he added up the cost of all the modifications he needed/wanted for the stock Wrangler.

The other Wranglers in the photo are both Rubicons.
