Chrysler supposedly in talks with M&M to sell Jeep brand
Posted Feb 11th 2008 4:37PM by Damon Lavrinc
Filed under: Chrysler, Jeep, India

India's Mahindra & Mahindra may have lost its bid for Jaguar and Land Rover, but the manufacturer of industrial and agricultural vehicles has its sights set on expansion, and that means teaming up with a larger automaker.

In order to reach the markets that matter, M&M may be looking to forge an alliance with Chrysler LLC. The Indian firm originally began selling Wranglers in its home market and might be interested in taking Jeep off Cerberus' hands. A report in the Economic Times says that "M&M is reportedly in talks with Chrysler for its iconic Jeep brand" although there's no confirmation that Chrysler is looking to offload the brand – yet.

Could Cerberus finally be looking to begin selling off parts of the Chrysler trifecta as many industry analysts have predicted? It certainly isn't out of the question considering the private equity firm's history. And where does the upcoming M&M Appalachian diesel pickup fit into this equation? The Indian automaker is adamant that it will begin selling its own diesel pickup in the U.S. next year, as well as a diesel hybrid version one year later. If this somewhat far fetched rumor of Jeep being sold to M&M turns out to be true, perhaps we'll see Jeep-branded diesel pickups in the U.S. before the decade is done.

With the Dodge Viper going the way of the Dinosuar, anything is possible under this new management team. I wouldn't be suprised to see Chrysler fold up shop in a couple of years and sell off Jeep to the highest bidder (regardless of who that is)

I would hate to see Jeep sold to a overseas company. It should be American!

On a positive note concerning M&M, they would definitely lean toward a full diesel line up and TRUCKS would be a priority. Hence, we would get a Jeep Diesel Truck...

Easy now guys - even guys from india would know enough about cars to not let jeep become a failure. The brand has too much pedigree to suddenly change it (well, chrysler had its shot at that...) to something awful.

That is exactly what I was thinking, although I would hate to see JEEP go oversees.

and what was it when the Germans were running things in Auburn Hills?

The New Chrysler has got to start selling things that aren't glued down, about the only thing they have left thats worth anything is the JEEP name. So i doubt they will sell, but they will do anything if they get strapped enough for cash

With a U.S. market share of 7 percent, Dodge is the Chrysler Group's best- selling brand and the fifth largest nameplate in the U.S. automotive market. In 2005, Dodge sold more than 1.4 million vehicles in the global market. Dodge continues to lead the minivan market with a 19 percent market share in the U.S. In the highly competitive truck market, Dodge has a 16 percent market share. .

Jeep has got to be a profitable line, right? Why would Cerberus sell off one of it's most profitable lines? Why not sell Chrysler off and keep Dodge & Jeep? They can't keep KK's and JK's on the lot, and the re-sale is good. Dodge and Chrysler resale is in the toilet!

And the thought of the Jeep brand being owned by anyone but an American company is just sad, sad, sad. We have got some real problems in this country if we can't keep something as iconic and original as the Jeep brand an American owned corporation. Not only that we can't, but that nobody cares if we don't. That's the real problem. Geez, what a disgrace. :?

you sell the most profitable line - because it gives you the most money.

if Cerebus has been really hurt by the housing/interest rate problems - they may have enough cash flow problems that they need the money.

From the get go that has been the plan, they buy and sell companies , thats how they make money. Funny how no one says a word about a German company owning Jeep :? , but any place else look out! Have you ever really looked at who makes the parts for Jeeps? Start looking at who all builds everything inside and outside of your Jeep. Its assembled in the US with most parts made here but by companies from all over the world. Its like people buying another great American icon Harley, they have had parts form all over the world for 20 years but yet they are true AMERICAN come on  and yes I have owned Harleys since 1975

I said "An American owned company", not a completely American vehicle. I never liked the fact that Chrysler was owned by Daimler Benz. I was excited when they were sold back to an American company...hell I was even pissed when New Venture Gear sold out to a Canadian company (Magna) a couple years ago. I live 45 minutes from New Venture's plant. I took it personal as a Central New York resident and as an avid Jeep fan.

But you're right, and I see your point. The lines are so blurred these days that I guess it doesn't matter. For me, I suppose it's just the principal. And as for selling the most profitable line because it makes you the most money...OK...I guess Cerberus doesn't want to be a car manufacturer owner any longer? I would think (and I'm NO business major) that common business practice is to cut losses and go with what makes you money. They sell their most profitable division to "make the most money" and they're left with Dodge and Chrysler who are tanking and bleeding millions a day. Whatever you gain from selling Jeep is spent keeping Dodge and Chrysler afloat.

I have only been wrong once before in my life... but I can see them from a business point selling off Jeep first, very marketable for sure. Then selling or splitting up the rest to other companies. One of the things they have to look at is how to get enough money for retirements and health insurance. From a business standpoint thats going to take a huge chunk no matter what they do. I can not really see them in the auto business for over 4/5 years at most.

As far as not being able to keep KKs and JKs on the dealers lots , guess they need to come and get them out of the lots around Jeep here in Toledo, plenty sitting around town on their lots
