Unfortunately, I don't believe that there is such a a thing as an "American" company or an "overseas" company, any more. They are all so intermingled and inbred that you can't tell where one ends and another begins. As long as Jeeps are still being built in the States, they're "American" to me.

That would totally suck if Jeep gets sold off. I never though the day would come when Chrysler would sell off the Jeep name. I don't know if I could buy another Jeep anymore. Very sad and disappointing.

What really makes the difference in who makes it? Do you think when American Motors bought it , people said thats it not buying from them etc, Jeep has been sold and bounced around its whole life, didnt even start out with the Jeep name. Old timers going around well its not a Willys anymore so I am not buying that new fangled Jeep name, its a name plate and will continue to be, has a world wide following, better than Dodge really.
Its like when AMF bought Harley, people complained but in fact AMF poured a ton of money into the company with new machines etc, upgrading the plants, actually saved Harley in a round about way.

First, we do not know for sure that Chrysler is going to sell Jeep. Second, if it does sell, we can only hope that it goes to a good company that values the quality and history of Jeep as much as they value the invested interest. I think most of us agree that we are comfortable with Chrysler owning Jeep and we really do not want to see it go into the hands of someone else. I love JEEP and the fact that Jeep is its own breed. Either way, this is a worthy thread topic as it brings all Jeep advocates together to share a common interest that we want preserved.

That is true. "Jeep" has been sold many times, Kaiser, Willys, and AMC. I don't know, it just seems everything is going overseas and now its happening to Jeep. I always thought of Jeep as American-made, and that is the reason why I always preferred Jeeps over any car/truck. And who knows what Mahindra will do with it. They could cut the Wrangler line and start producing 4-cyl sedans.

There are several mentions of M&M being in negotiations with Cerebus. http://www.jeepnewsnow.com/modules/news/

Keep in mind that Cerebus is not a car company. They are a capital venture company. They have a history of buying companies, gutting them for anything they can get, and fleeing. It was what they do.

M&M has made jeeps for the overseas market for decades, from what I have been able to find. They made a version of the CJ3B for about 30 years and even had a 4-dr CJ-5 variant.

As to American: if the profits return to an American corp., it is an American company. If they go to Japan, Germany, India, wherever, they are not an American company. DaimlerChrysler was a German company and the KJ was a german product. A Harley or Chevy made in Korea would be American, while a Honda or Toyota made in Ohio or Indiana is Japanese. It really isn't that hard to follow.

I certainly hope that if anything of this corporation goes out of the states but don't let it be JEEP. Just a note to some I have a DELL computer of high caliber and I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. Any an all problems I have experienced with either has resulted in my seeking Tech Assistance from in the end some India Division of their Tech Service team only after months of verbal sparring and demands for solutions to my problems. These arogant people will not solve problems but say what ever they can to get you off the phone rather then supply customeer service we demand for American products. If you think we had problem with JEEPS in the past if India get in charge in a short period of time I promise you in know time you will set fire to your Jeep and demand restitution from INDIA.
You get what you pay for and those who embrace the lowest effort for your dollar you will regret the end game.

It's all about money. What to think about Land Rover and Jaguar? Ford sold these British icons to an Indian firm.

Everything is going international, sure calls might be routed out to india or your computers are fixed and repaired in a UPS warehouse that DELL has set up contractual agreements with inorder to save time on getting your computer back to you. Everything is turning into collaboration and becoming multi-national. I say give M&M a chance IF they do buy Jeep. Obviously they werer doing something right building Jeeps over seas!

Anyone interested in understanding what's going on with corporations and everything going global read The World is Flat by Thomas Freidman broaden your thinking and remain optimistic 8)

Everything comes full circle!

None of the companies care about the "Jeep Tradition" unless it means sales and recognition. It only matters if it helps the bottom line. At least M&M builds trucks/suvs and has experience with diesels including tractors/ect.

BowTie/ Hemi/ Henry Ford/ Jeep...all just marketing terms these days. They are supposed to give you an idea of what to expect, but these days you have to dissect the hype from the hardware.

If a group of those able to invest and take a risk. Only to no just take over go to make it live up to it's standard and heritage. It would be extremely dissapointing if Jeep goes the rout of other now orphand vehiles that used to set side by side with Jeeps. AMC Javalin, Rambler, Matador. All now poor little forgotten rides that had a place execept to those who knew automotive art and abilitys. It's not to far a strech to see Jeeps, only a "I Remember When" in the future
