 Post subject: Detroit Locker vs TT

im looking to get one of the two, Detroit Locker or Detroit Tru-Trac, and i havent heard much on here about the detroit locker. not the spool, but the one that still gives in the corners. if anybody could give their opinions on each and tell me how the road manners are on the detroit locker, or how it works. i know i have heard a lot of good things about the tru-trac and the road manners are really good. but i like the tru-trac because its probably more than i need and it is all gears and it will be less maintenance. but i havent heard anything about the detroit locker

im just sick of soemtimes on ice having it in 4wd and only 2 wheels spinning, it would be nice to have the back 2 wheels locked in and have at least one of the fronts assisiting in 4wd. like backing up my friends icy driveway today i had it in 4hi and my back left wheel and front right wheels were spinning but the other 2 were sitting still

The Detroit locker is the best non-selectable locker out there,the TT is the best LSD out there.The TT is much better in the front axle then the rear though(what it was made for).

the price is better and just as good for the rear is powertrax...it's what i have and there is no racheting...smoth transition

I have a Detroit locker in the TJ and I have no complaints
smooth and predictable
I have had 2 power trax in the same rig with the same gears and tires and BOTH BROKE
a huge waste of money and time

Just remember that the with a Detroit locker the rear is LOCKED when you push the gas so if you give it gas around a slick corner then the rear will come around on you
how ever you know what it will do and how it will act after about a week and you will then learn to love it
unlike the power trax that may or may not lock depending on how it feels at the time

Now the Tru-Trac will never be as locked as the Detroit locker
it is an LSD not a locker so it will not lock up as good

cool thank you very much! and i have heard a lot more bad things about the powertrax than good, so i wasnt considering it. im sure some people have had good luck with it, but im not gonna take my chances. i will go with the detroit locker next time summit racing has a show because they have 10% off ;) and im sure ill have more summit bucks to spend there too :)

yup!.. i've made my mind up.. when i get lockers (dont know if i'm getting a winch or lockers for my next major mod).. but if it is lockers.. i'm going for the Detroit Locker in the back.. and DTT in the front. sounds like the best combination from what everyone here has said. however i dont think anyone has the combo yet.. so if someone wants to try it first go ahead :).. mine will have it sooner or later reguardless.

now what is all involved in installing the detroit locker in the back on my 8.25 with the 3.73? will i have to get it all setup again by a shop with the backlash and all that? the actual locker is about 600, what will labor be to install it?

The Detroit is a full carrier replacement so yes you'll have to to have it all setup again,most places charge about $200-$350 for install.

I recently had a Detroit Locker installed because my Powertrax blew. The Detroit Locker is working great so far. Drives much better than the Powertrax. Haven't had a chance to off road it yet, but I am sure it will do great. :D

I disagree
I have see the ESP work and it works good but the way it works putting the breaks on and such
many feel the way I do that with a TT in any diff of an ESP equipped rig would be very close to locker performance
when compared to a non ESP rig with a TT

i dont think anyone has.. but hopefully i will within a year or so. Those are both good points. I didnt think about the ESP actually helping the TT.. i was just worried about the ESP malfunctioning due to the lockers. I guess it knows when wheels are slipping.. and if they're locked then they wont slip. oh well.. time will tell

Even though it sounds like it would be great, I wouldn't recoment it to someone until a report came in on the pros/cons in the real world. I'd just hate to recomend it to someone and have them be the first and not work as everyone expects...

First, go detroit locker front and rear!!! That's definitely the way to go if maximum traction is your goal!!

Second, I've wheeled with a guy with a true trac in the front and a detroit in the rear. He has a CJ7 with 37" boggers and a 350!! When you really get on it, the true trac will lock up to a degree and pull you, but not immediately like a regular detroit. The true trac won't let one wheel just totally sit uselessly while the other spins....it's just one will spin most, and the other wheel will spin just a little bit. I wish I had a video of this guy trying to get up a rocky gully. It was a perfect example of how the true trac works. His front tires were what was holding him up, he just about had it, but one of the front tires was spinning more than the other was. Once he really got on it, it pulled him up and over and he got through.

I have no comment on how the true trac may work with your ESP systems, because I don't know all that much about them. However, my first instinct is that if you had a TT, you'd probably want to shut off the ESP stuff for wheeling. It may help it work better....but who knows??

Lastly, although I am a big advocate of detroits front and rear, considering the issues some people have had with the aluminum housing for the D30 center section on the liberties, a true trac may be a better option for you guys with IFS than the detroit. I guess it would be less stress on your half shafts too...

It's not the IFS that's the problem, it's the darn Aluminum Diff housing on the Dana 30A.

Well, if it didn't have IFS, it wouldn't have the D30A center section.

The Detriot would not be a good choice for the front of a KJ since you can't unlock the hubs,if you have lockable/unlockable front hubs then yes the Detriot would be really good.You can still do it but the street mannars would be very bad and wear the front tires bad.
