 Post subject: Belt squeel and Shudder at idle

this is my first serp belt vehicle and my belt started to squeel at idle. and
the truck also shudders like it wants to move. i don't recall my ex's doing
this and i know my brothers does not.

any thoughts?

R U comparing Jeep Liberty KJ CRD's to Jeep Liberty KJ CRD's, or to some of the other thousands of serp belt vehicles?

The Jeep Liberty KJ CRD engine utilizes an alternator with a damped one-way clutch, specific to and intended for Diesel service, not even comparable to any other vehicle on the road except another Jeep Liberty KJ CRD - this unique alternator drive pulley will chirp\squeek\rattle at idle - noticing also the serp belt is not like any other, made rather of softer, more conformative compound - replace it with yer fav cheapy aftermarket version and the impending-disaster-like noises will increase, accordingly

yep... they are all CRD's.. is it advisable to replace the belt? the ODO
says 35,4XX and i don't know when it was last replaced. on all the cars
i have bought (15+ yrs old) ya replace the belts just cause they are cheap.

Replace the serp belt only if the drive-ribs are cracked\split\missing or\and the belted threads are frayed\split - which yer fav cheapy a\m replacement will do within a year of installation - if the belt is deteriorated as indicated, replace it with identical DCJ stuff for longest quietest service - ours has ~60k on the original, still be lookin' good after I pulled it and scrubbed it with a nylon-bristle brush and hot soapy water

actually sounds somewhat "unsure if good" advice.

The serp. belt is on of the items that DC has as required change at 60K for both Sched A and Schedule B service. I was surprised to see that at 60K and the timing belt at 100K.

Is the softer compound the reason?

That is the correct method of determining necessity of replacement - if the belt is deteriorated at 35kmi, it'll likely fail way B4 suggested 60kmi event - if it looks unstressed like ours at 60kmi, run it but check it occasionaly for sign of deterioration, would be my advice

The over-all belt quality and appearance is nothing like the belts from any of our oem\am vendors - I would assume that to be the reason for the extended life - or, maybe the po had it replaced, but I found nothing to indicate that, as he was a member here on lostkjs

I'd heard that alternator pulley chirping rather angrily if idle rpm dropped, so because the belt looked pristine, I pulled it for inspection, including the various pulleys, tensioners and such - found no real indicator, except the belt had a bunch of shiny particles imbedded throughout the ridges and valleys - they turned out to be sand\rocks as I removed them all - I then used hot soapy water to finish the job, and dried the belt - then did show'n'tell to #2son to illustrate the vast difference in the new am belt he had brought along - needles to say, we re-installed the original, and it was a little quieter, and the am version is back at the auto parts emporium, where it should remain long as I'm servicing the little mule.

The service calls for the belt and tensioner at 60K, I follow you thoughts on the belt, how about the tensioner?

It'll make a scrunching noise when failing, and the pulley(s) will chirp\rattle\growl as they fail
