Just the next snake-oil or could there be something to it?

Motor Silk

Is this the new "Slick 50" - something everyone will swear by until it gets proven bunk?

Opinions?

Not sure *I* want to be a guinea pig....

Here's an idea - ask Consumer Reports to test it and see if it improves that 11 MPG rating!! :lol:

Don't know much about it specifically. I looked at the patent, and it deals with adding boron based additives. Boron is already used in motor oils as a lubricant, including Mobil1. I'm not smart enought to tell you the differences in levels in Mobil1 vs this additive.

But, since you brought this up, you can be the guinea pig.

With our luck they would take the parking brake off and disconnect the trailer and put air in the tires and use Drive instead of Reverse, and then assume that the increase in mileage was from the Motor Silk.

In all seriousness, I checked the link, and from the prices they're asking for one of their kits, plus the tone of their ads, I get the strong scent of snake oil.

As far as the 11 MPG rating, on the 20/20 thread it sounds as though we figured out how they accomplished that feat - they forgot about the fuel return line, and pumped half the fuel out of their special container back into the CRD's own fuel tank. They must have not driven it far enough to notice the fuel gauge going up, or just wrote it off to sloppy tolerances in the sending unit.

Hey, they can test my CRD for a month - give it to them with the low fuel light on, and get it back with a full tank! :twisted:

I tried Motor Silk in my 1999 Silverado and it did not improve mileage at all. I would not recomend anyone to buy it

This lubricant technology is actually possible but this is a pricey way to go. In the early 90's, I started using a friction modifier in both my commercial and personal vehicles that is brewed by a local tribologist with excellent results both in terms if durability and fuel ecomomy. You would have to run excessive mileage (ie...commercial service) to notice the difference. I noticed it more in the shop air compressor. This ran very hot until we added a little friction modifier, afterwards you could touch the comperssor head while it was running. I do know it to be slippery enough that it can't be use it in a new engine and expect the rings to seat. Probably the closest retail product available to his brew would be Prolong. However, I would not trust a product like this (Motor Silk) as a "one shot" deal as they claim it to be.

Was wondering, If you mix "snake oil" with alcohol and lye do you get biodiesel?
