Overhead Console Install ??

I saw that auction. I had it saved and went back to see how it ended. It looked new w/ the protective screen film still on. I would've tried for it 2 weeks ago, but I already have an 05 Console waiting to be installed. These things are cool! You must've wanted it bad also. I know how it hurts when you're outbid by $2.50. That happens to me a lot on eBay.

A friend of mine purchased my console from DC for almost what that auction went for. Still a ball of cash, but better than some alternatives.

Oh! In your 2005 Sport....Look behind your grill at the top right side and see if you have the temperature sensor already installed. There is a picture of it in FreedomKJ's guide. It is all black and about the size of your thumb w/ a wire connected to it. The sensor was already installed in my 05 Renegade. Also do you have metal wheel valve stems or know if you have the Tire Pressure Monitors?

Let us know. We could gather 2005 update information for FreedomKJ's install guide.

Well I put the '04 EVIC from a GC into my '04 KJ sport. The compass works but nothing else does. Everything else reads a dashed line. I checked my wiring but it looks correct. Anyone have any ideas. perhalps the splice was faulty? Help anyone. Thanks :cry:

Yeah it has a factory moonroof.

So if the window on the ceiling opens it's a sunroof, if it does not it's a moonroof...AFAIK from the factory, you get a sunroof...

If the EVIC has sunroof controls on it, then it will work (pending the year model stuff) with the factory sunroof.

'04 GCs use the same system as '03 KJs (the GC was 1/2 year early.) As mentioned before the KJ's computer changed in '04 and EVICs from earlier models will not function properly. You need an EVIC from an '04 KJ, Durango or Ram. Consoles from '05s may work, but I don't know of anyone that has tried one yet.

I have an '05 Rennie; what DCX model vehicles should i be looking for to possibly get an EVIC out of?

Isn't the difference between a sunroof an a moonroof just that a moonroof actually opens while a sunroof just cracks a bit?

I've had 3 different EVICs from '02 and '03 GC's and 1 OTIS in my '04 Liberty. They all were fully functional except for Temp. read-out. The '04 GC should be compatable the the others. You may have a problem with your wiring or a defective unit. The best way to tell is to borrow another one if possible and see what happens!

Some people seem to be confused about the earlier EVICs. They work fine (at least through '04) except the temp readout on '04s and newer because the temp. coding was changed. That is to say, you should get instant MPG (through '02), average MPG, distance to empty, miles to service, TPMS (some models), elapsed time, additional odometer, programming functions, warning messages and compass. But for those who feel the EVIC is worthless without temp readout, just get a Gentex mirror w/ temp readout instead and save yourself the confusion of all that distracting information!!

Can you tell me the wire colors and which pins they lead from your 04 GC EVIC connector?

I can check the wire diagrams in the 04 KJ service manual and tell you where they "should" be going. Of course, they can be soldered elsewhere. Other than the Year/Model compatibility, I think maybe the wire colors are a problem.

There really aren't too many ways to mess up the wiring, as there are only four wires. If it turns on, then you know the ground wire is good. If it turns on and off with the ignition, then you know the switched power wire is hooked up correctly. That just leaves the connection to the PCI bus, and the connection to the battery+ which feeds power wether the ignition is on or off. Either those two wires are reversed, or the connection to the PCI wire is bad, as that is the wire that serves as the data feed.

I found the problem. The splicer was not completely penetrating the wire insulation on the pci bus wire. After re-doing it it works perfectly. Thamks for everyones help. Next job will be to install a new ARB bull bar... When my next 4 paychecks arrive...

Don't mean to revive a dead post, but I just got a 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport Special Edition. I was wondering what EVICs can be used in it and if the instructions left by Freedom KJ have been updated for the 06 model? If not, has anyone had any experience with this?

I have an '04 sport with an EVIC from an '04 grand cherokee. The temp is the only thing that doesn't work. Not sure about the '06. Mine works but its very glitchy. The open door chimes don't work. When you open the driver side door EVIC says the other 3 doors are open. I am not sure it was worth the effort.

Bummer. I think that is why I want to know if someone else has done it yet. I don't want to go thru the effort if it isn't going to work correctly.
Also one other question, all the EVIC pics I have seen are in Tan. My interior is Gray, do you know if it also comes in gray.

I have an '02 GC model in my '04. Everything works very well (except temp); love it! If you've read some of the posts, it also enables some electronic customizing (lights, chimes, etc) that aren't otherwise possible except through a dealer.

The cases are interchangable and come in tan, lt. gray, dk. gray and black. Most important is the module (the brains). You can change cases anytime easily. If you PM me with your e-mail, I can send you pic's of the lt gray and dk gray -- both look good in the Liberty.

All '04 and newer Libertys come with a temp sensor, where it is an integral part of the fuel system. Accordingly, the PCI coding was changed on the Liberty that year (but not so with the GC), so '04 and earlier GC EVICs (and all '03 Liberty EVICs and earlier) can't read the temp. data on the newer Libertys. All other major functions should work, however. There can be some minor variation in some EVIC's in warning readouts, depending on the EVIC origin. All major displays and programmable functions still operate in all acceptable models as far as I know (provided there is no defect in the EVIC).

Remember, all EVIC's are not the same. There is a base model (no Homelink), an upgraded (Homelink) model, a deluxe (Homelink, TPMS) model (beginning in '02). Outside air temp can be had in the '04 and newer Liberty only by using '04 and newer Liberty EVIC's OR upgrade your rear view mirror to an auto dim w/ Temp and Compass function -- then you'll have 2 displays! Cost on e-bay about $50 or less if you shop (hint -- used GM truck 99 or newer, many (but not all) have temp.)

You can also get outside temp by getting an '04 and newer RAM (no Homelink available) or Durango OTIS, BUT
1. neither console case will fit the Liberty, so you'll need a compatable case. Makes more sense as an upgrade than a new install.
2. you'll lose programmability because it's an OTIS, not an EVIC.

So now everybody is an instant expert! :wink:

The best bet for you would be to find an EVIC from an '04 or newer KJ if you want all the functions to work. No guarantees of course, but they should work fine.

The temp sensor is ther i checked. what kind of programming or customization can you do? I scrolled through all the menus but its not clear that you could do much of anything. I have an evic with tps and homelink.
