If you hold the K&N up to a light you can literally see through it. Some of the holes are nearly as large as window screen mesh like Reflex compared it to. No matter how much air you can flow through it the real story is in the oil analysis which shows a much higher percentage of contaminants with the K&N. I'm not trying to pick a fight just pointing out a serious flaw in the filter. Everyone will have to make their own choice about what works in their vehicle.
I ran open air K&Ns on my 3.0L CSVT and my 00 Lightning and my oil analysis were all great. No issues.

I once swore by K&N until I moved from a damp environment (South Jersey) to the desert and started playing in the dirt in my Jeep. I always saw signs of dust in my intake tracts w/ K&N on a couple different vehicles including street driven ones and finally swore off K&N for good.
The above reading will explain the Amsoil Ea series of air filters and how & why they work. PLMK if you want a quote on the best deal going.

These gassers should never see anything but pavement under the tires, have about half the air flow or less of a CRD and about half the oil change interval so the K&N filter may only take a few k off the engine. In non turbo, street sport vehicles like these which need every possible reduction in air flow resistance the K&N probably pays off well.

For a strictly street vehicle, or a race vehicle, they are probably a good option. For a 4wd vehicle that sees any use off-road in dusty conditions, they are a really bad idea.

X2. Tried a K&N filter once on an '87 Subaru wagon. After a couple thousand miles, I had dust and dirt on the inside surfaces of the air filter housing that had gotten past the filter, and gunk and dirt on the throttle plate and inside surfaces of the 2 barrel carb.

Cleaned everything out, went back to a stock air filter, and never had that problem again.

Following pics from my KJ after a couple trips off road using a K&N after I first got it (when I still used them and swore by them, prior to changing my mind and doing research on the matter, etc.)

Just isn't worth worrying about using a K&N. I used Wix until the Amsoil Ea drop in came out and wouldn't hesitate to go back to them. Dare I find the same sort of dust in my intake w/ the Ea series and I will be back to Wix again and I Will report the same here.
My wifes KJ w/ FIPK uses the Amsoil Ea series cone filter and so far so good, no dust in intake.

Just to reiterate, but isn't that worrisome? That its picking up so little dirt that the thing basically never wears out or gets too clogged..?

The six layers of cotton each layered between screens can be cleaned with a spray nine type cleaner 100 times without damage. This guy said he must of cleaned it a dozen times in a million miles when it looked dirty. He was sure stretching the cleaning because it should of been every 50,000 miles which is 20 time.

Good comparison here http://www.oilchief.com/nanofiber/ . Also the K&N is not quite as easy to use as many think, washing and drying take several hours plus the frequent oiling. All varieties of filters are better than nothing but everyone will just have to examine their own particular situation and decide which one will work best for them.

I have been using the Amsoil EA air filter since it was first introduced for the CRD. My filterminder hasn't budged a bit, my mpgs have been excellent (bursts up to 31-32 mpg on trips), and my used oil analysis has shown very low silicon levels. Still on the same filter. I just take it out at my oil change and tap it to get the larger particles out of it and use low air pressure nozzle to blow out some of the other build up.

I'll stick with the Amsoil EA filter until something better comes along.
