Jeep Jim.....do what makes you happy with your Patriot and have fun with it.

As to the Jeep/Cayenne comparison, my Son has both. I have driven both. The Cayenne has awesome power for a heavy vehicle and you really feel it when you get into the turbo, and then you know it is a Porsche that just happens to have 4wd. His JK Sahara is not even in the same ballpark. But his Cayenne cost 3x what the jeep did and would NEVER go off-road as long as he has it. But he drives the Jeep EVERY day and not the Cayenne, and the JK goes off-road so if you were to ask him, he would just say he drives the Jeep more.

I think the Jeep will do just fine offroad with a lift kit and new tires. Ive seen pics of them(like above) and Ive heard they do pretty good offroad. Is that lift kit a full spring lift or a spacer lift(what kinda spacer)?

Make sure you get some rocker protection and good skid plates if youre going to be in alot of rock. Skids are needed for any kind of offroad really.

Jeepjeepster, the lift RRO makes is a spacer that goes above the shocks/struts and replaces the rear upper control arm in the rear to fix the camber.

Most of the Patriot guys are thinking that 2.25" is the limit, but I have a feeling you can go higher. I have seen plenty of Liberty's Higher than 2.25" and they have IFS How high can a liberty's go with spacers and springs alone before it starts having issues?

If it's a spacer on the top don't forget to extend the bumpstops or you'll kill the struts.

Something to look in to is doing a clevis lift for the front and spacers or isolators in the rear.

I'm no mechanic so I don't know if it's possible, but we can do it with the Libby so maybe you can do it with the Patriot too. Maybe one of the mechanics here can chime in and let you know if this is possible.

this may not be a bad idea
Post up a pic of the front and rear strut/spring assembly and let us see if we can come up with some thing
maybe a front and rear clevis lift?

I have never seen a clevis lift but isn't it just moving the spring mount on the shock/strut so the truck sits higher?

Do you happen to have a link to a how to?

As for photos its dark here already, I'll have to see what I can do tomorrow. If I dont get it done tomorrow it may be a week or so to get photos of mine... I'll check to see whats online already.

You forgot to mention they both come with 'Z' rated tires, you couldn't even get of a wet golfcourse with those. And that the Porsche has all the driveline stuff from VW. And its as low to the ground as a VW Golf. Forget about any ground clearance. Who needs a 0-60 in 8 secs in a 4x4? IMO those things are all show no go. I mean no disrespect, I just think they are not ofroad vehicles and they are not supersportscars. They are something inbetween.

Back on topic, Jim what I can see from those pics is that your front suspension has Mac Pherson shocks/spring combo. not like the KJ's double whishbone system. That's great, just fit an OTT spacer and your good to go, the bumpstop is inside the combo, in the top plate. So no problems there. Cannot make out the rear, will see if I can find a better pick.

Front:
Image

The rear seems to be a coil over.

The RRO kit looks fine by me. You can fit 225/75/16 tires...nice!

I found some better shots... here

Look about half way down at a post by Gramps. He shows detailed shots of both the front and back.

From the looks of it How high do you think I can lift the 'Riot?

Unibody, when I measured the ground clearence from one yesterday I wouldn't want to take those on a gravel road, man what a hack job with the unibody(okay for the street only) and what a mess of junk all over the under side,no way to protect all that junk.By the way a limited Patriot with the 17" rims has a measured 6 5/8" ground clearance.

tjkj2002 as admin said in recent post, we need to be nice to others. I have read enough of your posts (and appreciate them and I also respect you :) ) to know that you can articulate very well without using words like -- gravel road, hack job, junk, etc. to describe another vehicle.

Jim, hang in there and have fun.

what did I miss, whats wrong with gravel road, hack job, junk if its true? Lots of vehicles follow under that description, not for gravel roads etc.

Sorry, there alot of stuff under there, more then ours, that can get hung up on stuff when taken off the pavement.

The Patriot and Compass are nice vehicle for there intended purpose, offroad is just not one of them. They are marketed for the "mall crawling" crowd, just like the Grand and Commander, and since about '04 the KJ and KK.
