 Post subject: New CRD owner. Couple Questions.

Hey all my fellow diesel lovers. I bought an '06 Khaki CRD a couple of weeks ago. So far I really like this jeep, except for the low hanging oil filter. I was driving home one night and I hear this "ding" and look down and the oil light is on. So I pull over asap and turn off the engine. I notice that there is oil all over the ground, turns out it was spewing out of the filter. So I put a new filter on and add some oil. Then I start it up and hear a horrible noise coming from the turbo. Turns out it blew the turbo. Good thing I bought the 3 year warranty. So I take it into the place I bought it because they are supposed to wave the deductible. So it takes them over a week to fix it and they didn't change the oil(I needed it changed because the closest place just had 10w30) and they didn't replace one of the gaskets. They say the gasket could possibly leak. Well that's just great...

Anyways, now it's all fixed after I changed the oil. I decided to take a good look under the car. I noticed that it has airbags in the rear springs. This isn't stock is it? If I want to add a lift kit will I have to remove the airbags? Also, which skid plate should I get that will cover the oil filter?

Sorry if these are Newb questions, it's my first Jeep. Thanks for the help!

Heck of a first post. I'm glad those bad experiences didn't get you L.O.S.T.
In addition to this site,there's a good wikibook that has stuff on armor, axles, suspension, etc:

The front skid should protect the filter from many incidental impacts. It sounds like someone installed something wrong. Also, did you check on if the oil that was put in there was full syn and one of the two recommended weights (0W40 and 5W40)?

On the turbo, did it kill the mechanism itself (grinding noise) or just blow the hoses (vacuum cleaner noise and loss of power)?

No, the airbags aren't stock, but they are useful for towing and I'd bet if you remove them to put in a lift there's someone here who'll take them off your hands.

Good to hear you took immidiate action on the oil light coming on. I have heard people ignoring it :evil:

Welcome to LOST - we're quite a few happy KJ owners here, and we'd be happy to help you with your questions :)

Dan already said what needs to be said for your problems, as far as I know.

Soon you will be modding that jeep to suit your needs. Be that preventive maintenance (CCV catch can, SEGR), upping comfort (OME lift) or getting new electrical gizmos (EVIC).

My first mod to my CRD was a set of MOPAR skid plates to cover the transmission and transfer case (and protect the oil filter). Less than 100 bucks, and you can install them yourself without too much trouble. Highly, highly worth it, imo.

The turbo was making a grinding noise. I'm sure it got too hot very quickly with no lubrication, especially since they are just hot anyways. The filter was installed correctly. The oil was coming out of the side of the filter. Now that it's off the Jeep, I can't even tell where the oil was coming out.

As far as the oil, it still had the same oil filter on it that I had put on it for the time being so it would stop leaking. I'm sure they didn't change the oil because they said they had to "add some oil." I then changed it with the Rotella T 5w40 and used the Fram filter.

Which Mopar skid do I buy to cover the oil filter? Engine or tranny?

4 skids available

Engine Skid - Covers the front diff and front of the engine, but not the Oil filter. All CRD's came stock with this skid.
Tranny Skid - Covers the tranny, from the front cross member to the rear cross member. Stock skid doesn't protect the oil filter very well, better than nothing.
Transfer case Skid - Covers the transfer case
Gas Tank Skid - Covers the Gas Tank

After market skids are better and cover the oil filter. Consider the SkidRow tranny skid, or the AllJ's superskid 1. The AllJ's SS1 is no longer made, but is a good skid if you can find one used.

MOPAR tranny skid covers the oil filter from direct impacts from underneath, but leaves the side of it (passenger side) open. Easy oil changes, but I guess you could have a stick or rock stab it from the side under some circumstances.

I bought mine from jparts.com... they had free shipping at the time (these skids are heavy).

Aftermarket offers better protection, but that tranny skid runs $40 bucks. Skid row plate will cost you $250, and other options more. I don't do enough off roading to justify that kind fo expense.

Oh my god that oil filter is hanging low.

I'm glad I got an EU model with the filter further upwards and covered partly by the engine crossmember.

I've had a Mopar filter where the crimp at the edge came loose from the can - started leaking - it wouldn't be difficult for it to completely seperate and dump a lot of oil - just bad filter manufacturing - and the filter looks great - no damage.
