I had Jeff Roberts of Rocket Chip, program a level one tune on my wifes CRD ECU last summer. It was interesting to watch him remove the ECU and set it up on a bench and reprogram it. Jeff is well known at Freds for his TDI tuning capabilities and tours the US attending TDI GTG's on a regular basis. In addition to my wifes CRD he also tuned and or upgraded about a dozen TDI's that day.
He was a bit reluctant to program the CRD since he is well aware of the TC issues and didn't want to be responsible for hastening the demise of anyones transmission. We discussed different levels of tune and he basically can do 3 levels, however, unless you have the Suncoast TC, he probably wouldn't do a level 2 or 3 tune. He regularly turns off the CEL associated with deleting the EGR on TDI's, however he didn't want to attempt to turn off the EGR and associated CEL on the CRD. He indicated without doing further research on the CRD engine and knowing what is all effected by turning off the EGR, he wouldn't consider turning it off.
Anyway, the Rocket Chip tune really made the CRD haul stupid until the TC had to be replaced by the $tealership. It seems like the Stealership reflashed either the ECU or TCU. Guess I'll have to meet up with Jeff when he is out my way again and have him reflash the RC1 tune and maybe calibrate and install a boostvalve.
If anyone lives near Red Lions PA, you may want to look up Jeff Roberts of Rocket Chip and see if he would be interested in using your CRD as a test mule for further research. Pricing for tuning is about the same as Inmotion, maybe a little less if you can catch him at a TDI GTG.
I believe most major ECU tuners purchase their base tunes from the same suppliers in Europe and then depending on their level of skill, further custom tune the basic programs. You have to realize the market size for the CRD doesn't lend itself to extensive development and testing like the VW TDI market does.
IMHO Inmotion Tuning isn't in the same league as Jeff or Charlie when it comes to tuning and Charlie's tuning is going to be expensive. Jeff has been tuning TDI's longer than both, although, Charlie does has some interesting toys. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate to go with Rocket Chip programming again in both my CRD and TDI. Only problem is that Jeff is in such demand that you will likely have to wait for programming, but in my book, its time and $ well spent.
Should be interesting to see what Charlie comes up with to delete the EGR/CEL and the level of tunes he will offer. I'd be interested in hearing what turbo boost pressures he is running with each program and if he will recommend a boost valve ( cheap insurance) for his more aggressive tuning programs. Upgrading to larger Bosio fuel injectors if Charlie can figure out how we can do that and the cost/benefits of doing so would be great.
Just my $.02 for what its worth.
