In a little more than 2 weeks i will be in moab utah for my very first time. as excited as i am, making the 5 hour trek with limited music entertainment had me a little worried. with the stock RBK head unit, i cant bring my iPOD along without an FM modualtor, Id have to make countless CD's to fit my 8 some 15 minute long techno/house music mixes because the OEM headunit isnt MP3 compatible. a new head unit was in order. just in time for the some 6 hour trip, a kenwood kdc-x491! its MP3 compatible and is HD radio ready, SAT radio ready, bluetooth ready, cd changer ready, and features a usb interface for direct control of ipods and usb memory drives. theres no way this trip, or any other trip, will be boring!

now all that needs to be done on the KJ is the 12,000 mile service interval before i hit the road, and if it passes the visual inspections, ill be good to go!

Oh gawd, first time in Moab for EJS?

I avoid the place like the plague during EJS, even just driving through Moab on my way to nicer places is crazy!

I have a 30Gb Zune. Wish there was a universal connector for all MP3 players so iPod didn't have exclusives to receivers.

Another one of my bright ideas.....

Make universal adapters Zune to iPod cable. Zen to iPod cable, etc...

just use the aux audio input jack.

I know its expensive but I just got the Kenwood KVT-719 with the ipod video control. I've got all the controls through the head unit that I did on the Ipod and it even plays the video, it'll display the album artwork when playing music too. Now that I've got my soundsystem in place I can make it home in May where hopefully I'll have a lift, tires, and bumpers waiting for the KJ.

If you don't mind controlling the iPod with it's own control then you can always do what I did. I picked up the USA Spec DF-CHR. It plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the stock radio and gives you two RCA inputs. The radio thinks it's a CD changer; track 1 is the first input and track 2 is the second. I combined that with a Belkin auto kit and then made a little bracket out of some scrap metal and sprayed it with bedliner spray. My iPod just clips to it with the beltclip.

It's been working great for a year now, and I can plug any audio source into it, not just an iPod.

i love having a dedicated ipod control, theres nothing like it. and the best part is this head unit can control other music players as well not just ipod. its well worth the $250 installed price i had to pay for it. if it breaks im totally getting another one
