I apologize if the answer to this exists somewhere on this forum. I couldn't find it.

I would like to alter my '06 KJ Renegade such that it does not beep the horn when I lock the doors using the button on the key. I would like it to still blink the marker lights once to indicate that it has locked the doors. I just don't want it to beep the horn. Has anyone written up or does anyone know where I might find a how-to for doing this?

I feel that the horn beep is excessive, it draws attention to me if I do it in public, and I certainly don't want to do it in my driveway at night when I know my neighbors are sleeping. Because it beeps, I find I rarely lock the doors using the key. What I typically do is get out, leave the driver's door open, go to the back of the jeep and let my dogs out, then walk back to the driver's door and hit the lock button. My Tacoma does not beep when I lock the doors with the key. It would be nice if I could make the KJ behave the same way.

Thanks,
Jack

It can be done,I did it on my '02 KJ,look in the owners manual and it is all explained in there,I can't remember how and the '06's may be slightly different anyway.

Oh, it's a programmable thing! I'll check tonight. I hope so, that would be great. I just assumed I'd have to re-wire something. Thanks!

It can be done very easily with the overhead console (EVIC), if you have you.

Mine is an 05MY with the EVIC. I just scrolled through the options on the EVIC and selected the horn to not beep. There are options for different settings in mine. I hate that also and turned my horn beep off.

If you do not have the EVIC, there must be another way to do it in the owners manual.

This can be done with your evic, but if you don't have one I think you can do it with your remote.

Here you go: http://www.jeepkj.com/forum/showthread. ... light=horn

Thanks for the replies! That HowTo mentions that it's been said to not work for 05 models. I'm betting that could be extended to 05-07 models. In any event, given that it could be done sans EVIC in 02-04, I'm sure there must be a way to do it in 05-07. I'll check tonight and post back whatever I find.

<farnsworth>Good news, everybody!</farnsworth>

So you can disable the horn chirp without EVIC on 05+ Liberties. The directions on that lostkjs link above aren't correct, as is suggested there. The steps changed slightly. From page 26 of the 2006 owner's manual:

Code:
NOTE: The horn chirp can be enabled or disabled within 23-50 feet (7-15 meters) of the vehicle by the following procedure:

1. Press and hold the "Lock" button on the transmitter.

2. Continue to hold the "Lock" button, wait at least four but no longer than 10 seconds, then press the "Panic" button.

3. Release both buttons.

4. Repeating steps 1-3 will restore original transmitter operation.

Did it work for you? If you ever run across a vehicle that can not be disabled, you can do it by adding a relay that is closed when the ignition is hot (hook it to a wire that only has power when the key is on). And then splice it into the horn wire. Cut the horn wire and hook one end to one side of the relay contacts and the other end to the other side of the relay contacts.

When the key is off, the horn can not sound.

It's a crude fix, but it will do what you are wanting.

This worked for my '05 without an EVIC. The instructions in the '05 owners manual (mine anyway) are incorrect.
