Well I just got back from having a new Magnaflow muffler installed and wow, what a difference in tone over stock. Rumbles beautifully now and I'm hoping to gain a little performance on pep and mpg, even if its the tiniest little bit. Bought it as Summit Racing (what an incredible store btw down in Talmadge!) and Midas welded it on. Nice and clean and even the guys at Midas were standing around talking about how good this sounds "for a Liberty" to quote. Anyhow, just wanted to mention it and how happy I am with the sound of the Magnaflow...all stainless steel and didn't need the whole catback since the tailpipe is still good to go. I recommend this for our Libbey's 100%. If I can get a sound clip up I will, but for now, you won't go wrong with this exhaust mod with a great sounding, well put together muffler. for reference, its the 2.5" in and out C/O. welded up like it was made for the KJ.
I'll keep ya posted on any gains that are noticed...with the price of gas, if I even see a 1 mpg increase, I'm satisfied. ;)

First trip to Summit Pote? Have to go there at least every 3 months to get my fix! I think I have paid for half of that store over the last twenty years or so! :lol: :lol: Magnaflows do have a nice tone to them. All of us need to hit the Truck Show they have there every year, ever been to it? Great place in a great town, it shares my first name! :lol: :lol: 8)

Hey tom....yeah first time there...I coulcn't believe the size of that store!! Its like a BestBuy sized building...and yeah Tom, I think I saw a big 8 foot framed picture of you over the Pick Up counter...something about Customer of the Decade??? ;)

I chose the Magnaflow over the Flowmaster for a few reasons...1. Its about $50 cheaper than the flowmaster with the same specs...that being stainless steel construction...the Flowmaster 40 series and 50 series are not the same...they want about $130 for their stepped up stainless ones. 2. I wanted a chamberless exhaust and looking at the cutaways of the Flowmasters they had on the showroom, made it clear to go with Magna...there's lots of baffles and chambers in those Flowmasters. 3. After listening to the Flowmasters, I didn't like the raspy sound at higher rpms...Magnaflow has some serious low frequency rumble and at high rpms, does not sound tin canny. 4. and last but not least, asking the flatout question to numerous techs there at Summit Racing, everyone one of them said the Magnaflow is just simply a better muffler for the price range. When you look at a Magnaflow next to a Flowmaster 40/50 series, you can see the quality of the construction in the Magnaflow. Its very beefy and well put together. They all said hands down they would also go with a Magna...advice coming from a place that sells probably just as many of both brands...

Anyhow, like I said above, the sound is killer...nice deep low rumble without it being too loud in the cabin. Not having raspiness at high rpms was a big concern too...I forgot to mention that multiple people at both the muffler shop AND the parts store stated by that by construction alone, the Flowmaster is simply going to be a louder muffler across the board...with plain "loudness" not being the main thing I was after. No offense to any of the LOST folks with Flowmasters...I've heard plenty of sound clips that sounded pretty good here, I was personally looking for a more beefy, straight through flow exhaust and found it with the Magna. For those wondering....$72 bucks at Summit, and $72 fully welded on both ends install at Midas, $72 for a grand total of $144 bucks....by God, that's only 2-3 fillups at the pump anymore!!!!! :shock: :shock:

Acutally I was worried about that and honestly at cruising speeds its not all that different than stock. I'd say more of an audible rumble but no droning and mild in that 1500-2200 rpm range. You really hear the rumble upon startup and fast acceleration and in that magic 3000 rpm area when speeding up on the highway, but once you get to cruise, its very nice and low key. I was pleasantly surprised at its tone while cruising....more bottom to it without that ear-pressurizing drone.

ive always like Magnaflow exhausts. ive had them on a few cars and have always been really pleased with them. glad you like it. it would be really nice if you could get some sound clips or a video up of it :wink:

Congratulations Pote, I got the MagnaFlo before I got through my first tank of gas when I bought my KJ. But, i will tell you that in about a rear the sound even richens with age. To me it sounds more like a V-8 as it gets older instead of a 6. Now that your getting air out of the engine faster allow air in faster TOO. Now if you dont have a aftermarket air filter, get one if I may suggest go with Amsoil cheaper then K&N and better in my opinion. Then follow the tricks of MonsieurGlen . With air coming in and going out easier the engine will slowly learn (as in computer). and will run better and respond so much better. :twisted: :twisted:

i was a flowmaster man
a throw back from the youthful hot rod days
but my wife got her 1st hotrod (turo saab 93) and wanted a low but noticable sound to make her car rumble
heard my 1st magnaflow on the turbo saab and was sold hit the net and ordered mine to go on the liberty

hey can you go wrong if it's backed by mario andretti :P :P :lol: :lol:

there are differant magnaflows that will fit I went with the round tube looking one for ground clearence

I got a drown sound from the jeep after the muffler was installed but then I fabbed a small s curved pipe and added a tip
the differance is VERY noticable the sound didnt changeit just is not "rolling around" under the jeep any more

I dont think I will be buying flowmaster any more.... :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I'm not sure if this is the part number or not: 11225 It isn't listed as the part number but it is the only number they put on, other than the amount. The charge was $100.00 plus $6.00 tax. Nothing extra for putting it on. Not bad at all!

I already have the K&N in there from last year so the dynamic duo is in place. I know the Amsoil one is the bees knees too...That's an added bonus that the sound will "get richer" over time...to me, that's just a big ol bowl of extra gravy!!! thanks for that heads up.


To everyone, I am going to shoot some video this weekend and post up some sounds for you. Been hectic here at work and been getting home rather late after 12-16 hour days. Got some time this weekend and will do my best to do you all proud.


FYI for those still looking to do this mod...Magnaflow has a smaller version with the same in/out specs that fits our KJ. They also have the oval design and the cylindrical design that both fit. I personally went with the LARGER (24" overall length - 18" muffler length -- flat oval) to keep ground clearance. I went with the larger because the summit folks (and muffler shop confirmed) that going with the smaller length actually makes the muffler louder....same would apply to a Flowmaster. I think the smaller Maganaflow (and same for FM) is a 14" muffler as opposed to the 18" one I got. I can look on the receipt when I get home for a part number. Keep in mind, our stocker muffler is a big beast and is even bigger than the Magnaflow in length, the reason they needed to weld in a 8" or so length of 2.5" pipe behind the muffler to meet the first curve going up and back.

Makes sense that a smaller muffler is going to sound higher pitched and more raspy and in the end, less dampening and therefore "louder" -- just not deeper in sound. I recommend the fullsize 18" (24" total length when you read the specs)

GA....do you have a pic for giggles of the little tailpipe mod you did...might be a good tidbit for anyone with aftermarket exhaust and are experiencing droning. I don't seem to have the drone, but I'm sure many others might benefit from what sounds like an easy mod to cut the drone down. thanks in advance.
