NEW PML 11039 Extra Deep Trans Pan

Last Sunday I swapped out my stock Trans Pan for the New PML 11039 Extra Deep Transmission Pan that was just released.

On my 42 mile Monday morning drive to Chicago Midway Airport (at 34f ambient temp) the pan kept the trans so cool that the trans temp gauge needle moved only a little, but never came up to the 100f mark. I shot the pan next to the trans temp sensor and read an external temp of 62f. Based on the 62f reading and assuming a 30f drop from inside to outside temp, I would guess my trans temp was 93f when I parked which is close to the gauge reading.

Nice pan. Infrared thermometers are very innacurate on bare metal surfaces unless calibrated for it. Usually reading very low.

edit: Forgot to add, stick a piece of masking tape on the pan and read that with the infrared thermometer. The flat finish will give a more accurate reading.

You are right CATCRD about the accuracy of infrared thermometers on external surfaces, but they are a great tool to do a quick spot check on, engines, bearings, and electric motors. Lacking a secondary trans temp sender and needing to catch my flight to Buffalo, the infrared was better than nothing. Some industrial gear box manufacturers publish maximum external allowable temperatures for their components. If you were shoot a water outlet on an engine running at 180f you would get 150f on the infrared thermometer. Sometimes when you suspect a bad bearing such as an idler, shoot it with an infrared and shoot another known bearing that is OK, the bad bearing will stick out like a sore thumb.

Me, I'm dyslexic, can't even do simple math problems, failed math miserably, but I can spot a mispelled word clear across a mall parking lot - to wit: Triple (3), or Tipple? 3 on the tip? Three on the top?

I have the 'regular' deep pan and have similar experiences. This morning it didn't hit 110 on the gauge until I got to work in 40 degree weather.

With the large pans is the fluid getting warm enough to lock your torque coverters :?:

Under the driving conditions I had Monday March 17th, 2008 everything was normal. I suspect it may take a mile or two more on the toll way when the temp is below zero to shift into high and lock up. I hope I don't get to test that until next winter, I have had enough.

should be. I haven't noticed anything different since I installed it last fall. I'm sure the temp is actually warmer that is circulating through the trans. The temp I have is read from the bottom of the pan so I'm sure its quite a bit cooler than the stuff in teh system.

The Trans fluid cooler in front of the inter cooler is dumping cooler fluid into the pan. The temp we measure at the bottom of the pan is close to what the pump is drawing into the inlet. Our PML pans finish the job of the cooler up front and help send cooler fluid into the trans and torque converter.
