I'm curious if anyone has experiemented with propane injection on CRDs. Something like a bully dog system possibly?

The other question is about Turbo's. I come from a drag racing background and when a turbo is involved there is always clipping and porting to be done. Can anyone tell me what kind of Turbo my new CRD has and confirm if anyone has experiment with different or moded turbo's and/or some sort of a top mounted or front mounted air/air intercooler?

I've only just drove this puppy home from the dealer and I'm already think about modding it up. Increasing the boost a tad with an AVEC controller, installing an EGT and boost gauge and working on the turbo. I can already see brackets being made up for a top mounted intercooler and the addition of a hood scoop to feed it fresh air. I'd love to know if anyone else is tweaking their CRDs...

Thanks!

all i can help with is there is already an intercooler in the truck, surprised you
missed it. and there is not a lot of info to be had on the turbo that i know of as
far as mapping goes.

I'm also interested in hearing about a propane system, what can you tell us about them, with regards to real world performance gains?

Turbos... You have a VNT system, and its heavily computer controlled. Theoretically, you should be able to monkey with it by altering the MAP signal, but you have to follow that with fueling too.

I'm decently happy with the intercooler performance on the KJ already, monitoring the sensors tells me that even with boost, the incoming air is not rising much in temperature. Maybe 20-30 degrees over ambient most of the time. Granted, I'm not driving like Mario Andretti, but still.

The stock turbo is a GT2256V. One of Garrett's OEM only turbos.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I think if you can't see the parts you inquired about then you should do a little more research before modifying your CRD. The things you asked about can destroy an engine if not properly tuned. They are for serious performance upgrades and should be done by a professional tuner, real time.

The VGT propeller that is already in the CRD should be able to provide more boost than the little 2.8L can handle. We already have an immense intercooler in the jeep and I can't conceive of a possible scenario that would need a larger one. The hottest upgrades in performance are going to be in the programing and not so much in hardware other than the transmission components.

Most folk do a chip or ECM tune of some sort, the SEGR, and then call it a day. A few have talked about water/meth and propane but I don't know of anyone who has one of these installed.

After a power chip and a SEGR, it will already put out enough to shorten the life of the transmission. I would start with the transmission before doing anything at all to increase the power of the motor.

All propane does is add more fuel, when all the oxygen is all gone you can't burn any more fuel. Read the threads and plan before you move, this engine is no dog. Look at the mods the other members have done to their rigs.

There are not a lot of big mods for this little engine. It isn't like the pick-up market. There isn't as much of a market for serious performance up grades and the little VM isn't a 1000lbs Cummins able with stand heavy moding. I'm sure you can find a good turbo vendor like Industial Injection that could mod or replace the turbo, but why. I believe the stocker can handle most, if not all, the available fueling mods. There is no aftermarket intercooler and again, no need. Remember modding is a slippery slope. The more you do, the more you need. About the only thing we have are pressure boxes. You could probably take an existing propane or water/meth kit and make it work mechanically. Propane doesn't pay for itself in mileage/efficency, but can add power. I would choose water/methanol over propanne. That can give you nice power without extra heat/EGTs, but there is no Liberty system. You could call someone like Snow Performance and see if they would work on a CRD kit??? A SEGR, gauges, Suncoast torque convertor/transgo kit and Inmotion or pressure box will give you a sweet CRD. Oh yeah, don't forget about the fuel delivery system.

I've looked at Snow's universal MAP based kit, and I don't see why it wouldn't work on our CRDs.
