Will a 241 TC (Rock-Trac) fit in the Liberty?

So...I won a brand new 241OR transfer case at the EJS raffle on Friday night.

A mechanic buddy of mine says he's almost certain that the 241OR will just bolt in to replace the 231J. Anyone know whether that's true or not? I know it's got a fixed rear yoke, so I'd at least have to get a new drive line (I'd order one from Tom Woods), but what other challenges will I face?

Sure...I may just sell the thing on eBay or something...but how cool would it be to have a Rock-Trac in a KJ???

6-spds came with the 241J. The only difference is the 2.72 interior gearing. I know it doesn't answer the tranny compatability question if you have an auto.

I'll give you $1.50 cash for it right now, and I'll even pay for the shipping! Congrats on the nice win.

According to the NP/NV tech who answered my email from awhile back, the only thing you need is the custom shaft. Can't seem to find the email but I did post it on here, as well.

There are two options, change to the NP241OR that is used the current Rubicon, or the Teraflex teralow 231HD. Tera's product is a new front case assembly with the 4:1 low (disassemble the 231 and build with this new front section). The 241OR is a replacement transfercase that has the same mounting and input gear, but different outputs and length than your current 231, thus requiring prop modifications.

Ooh, that sounds VERY promising! I can probably get a new Tom Woods prop shaft for a $200-300 or so, right?

I wanted to get a SYE, anyway...this way I wouldn't have to!

The Roct-Trac will bolt in the KJ,the shifter pattern is different though(reversed).And yes JJ has one in his SFA KJ,and so does Allyrand.

seems that people just can not seem to get that NP and NV are different

now as far as putting one in a KJ
I do not see a reason you could not but you may need new drive shafts front and rear
you may be able to reuse the front just get it retubed
but for the rear you will need one with a slip joint

You know thinking about it this is going to be a huge head ache
best thing you could do is sell it to me for say $100 and just avoid the trouble :lol:

Vastly different in appearance.

The NV241J has been called the NP241OR also but the correct name is the NV214J.

The certificate that I received from the Mopar rep at the raffle says "Mopar High-performance 241OR Transfer Case"...I'm sure that must be the NV214J Rock-Trac.

They wrote down a ballpark value of $1,500 for the raffle prize. That can't possibly include installation. Can you and Marty put it in for me, Troy?

I stand corrected. Yes, you can see the extra ribbing on the whatever-you-want-to-call-it-that-troyster-won. But it seems like the answer is that the two bolt on in place of one another at the tranny ( the hardest part to adapt in most cases.) So that is good news.

In better news, he has not declined my $1.50 + shipping offer!!! :shock:

You got the RockTrac,the cheapest I have ever seen a new one was $1650.

Sure we can install it but you will need new F/R driveshafts and a new front D30A yoke/seal.You won't be able to drive it until the new driveshafts are in and you have to install the t-case to get the correct measurements for the new shafts,you'll need the new yoke on the D30A also to get the correct front driveshaft measurement.It takes a couple of days to a couple of weeks for the new driveshafts to arrive.

Oh and like I said before the KJ t-case shifter will be reversed,2wd will be 4low and 4low will be 2wd.

Yeah, I'm probably better off getting it installed locally. I have to get the TC through my local dealer...I can't wait to their response when I tell them I want it installed in a KJ.

Don't have a dealer install the t-case,they will mess it all up and cost you to much money.Have a good offroad shop or tranny shop do it.

It gets better:

Of the three Jeep owners who went to the EJS in my group, only one sat through the whole raffle, and he was the only one who didn't win anything.

He sat there and collected two prizes (he owns a TJ): Some fancy steering setup for a TJ (for the guy with a CJ5), and my 241. :lol:

I'm kind of hoping that the guy with the CJ will give him the steering thing-a-ma-jig (worth about $400). He sure as heck isn't getting my TC!
