One of my agruments has been that the molding of that plastic puc is bad - i.e. it's very difficult to get good flow around the heater connector - therefore you tend to get lot's of leaks - and many of them were bad from day one - that's why some people had constant problems and the dealers couldn't figure it out (if you don't have pressure - there's almost no way to find that leak)

Well, my return to town coincided with the Wife's CRD low fuel light coming on so I went ahead and installed the in-tank lift pump last night. The info in this post was very helpful. I will post some pics of things not already shown that I think might help others understand the details.

--the pump module install was really straight-foward, I found it helpful to remove the three torx screws in the filler area prior to dropping the tank so the hose range of motion was increased.

--I completely removed the rear harness from the vehicle.

--the 05 gasser harness is in-fact about six inches shorter than the CRD harness. I soldered in one 6"(hot) and one 8"(ground) splice mid-wire and the fit was perfect

--I ended up just removing the two needed wires from the gasser harness and installing them in the CRD harness.

two wires from gasser harness prior to splicing and installation into CRD harness:

If anyone is planning for this install and wants to save a few bucks on the harness, I have enough wire/connectors from the gasser harness for at least one more install on a CRD like mine, PM me. EDIT: One set already shipped (that was quick!) The connectors for the extra gasser plug are the same as the pump connection, so I have enough connectors/wire left to make one more complete set if anyone's interested.

It would be great if someone would compile all the info in this thread into a single-post how-to to aid others.

Now I never have to show my wife how to operate the bleeder valve!!!

So, it looks like a standard pin/socket combo. Anyone know what size/style they are? Other than that, we just need some red/black wire, yes?

Maybe all this wire stuff will make sense when I see them, I am going to have to review the remove this one, replace with
this one connect to existing one here and here, to make any sense of the steps, I must be missing something here, back to
reviewing them all.

what is happening here.....

people are buying the wiring harness so that :

1. they get the correct color coded wires (the two that you remove
and place in the CRD's harness) to run the Dodge 25/3500 fuel
sending/pump in the CRD.

2. so everything looks stock should the dealer do any work and
so if anyone else does any work on it.

all that is happening is the correctly colored wires are completing
the correct circuit to run the Dodge 25/3500 fuel sender/pump. if you
don't mind wiring in an aux pump all from power that you find on your
own you don't have to do anything in this thread ralating to the stock
harness.

The CRD's are pre wired the same as the V6's with a fuel pump in the tank
we are simply using the stock wiring to the full potential. kinda like if you
don't have power windows, all the wires are there for the windows just not
in use.

Fuel pump wires on pins 1 and 4 are missing in the fuel module connector harness - from there, green\red hot wire on pin 4 goes to pin2 in the cabin connector under the rear seat, and the black wire on pin 1 goes to ground on the floorboard - so easy a caveman could do it....................

Ok that makes a bit more sense, stating the wires that need to connect in each harness for the 05 has
cleared it up a bit. Thanks for the info, part were backordered, but now they state they have shipped.
Looking forward to seeing the CRD start like my TDI, amoung other improvements.

OK, just ordered the parts. I'm going to call this the GULP mod - "gmctd's Upgrade to Lift Pump".

I'm planning to do this in conjunction with install of the Rock Lizard rear bumper since I have to drop the Fuel tank skid plate anyway.

i just went to the dealer to order the parts... they wanted $394 for
the pump/fuel sender assy. dealer said they were having problems with
that part.. the new redesigned one is set to hit distributors next week.

then i decided to check advanced auto... they part they pulled up was $134..
their notes say it is discontinued.. he calls the supplier and the supplier asks
how he got that part number cause they don't even have the part, it is a
new part, and they don't know when they are going to get it in.

anybody else have problems like this?

oh i asked fot the fuel tank pump/ level assy for a '05 2500 Cummins

So do we have an 05 wiring harness ending in 284AB in a step by step picture connection? I have three plugs that will be will be outside, I see the one that will connect to the in tank module. Since I have not dropped the tank yet to see how the current harness is connected, will I use
the other two plugs? I will look over this thread and see if anyone has taken photos of these parts, and if not will try to post them once they are connected right. My question, can you test this pump before putting in the tank (dry) or is it like most pumps, needs fluid for lubrication.

Does it give a part number that someone can cross and verify as correct :?:

Edit: Never mind they don't give a part number :!:

Here is a blurry shot of 05 CRD and gasser harnesses laying on a fresh banana leaf.

Image

The gasser harness has an extra plug outside. This is one reason I decided to just pull two wires from that harness and add to the CRD. The other three plugs that both harnesses share are, clockwise from top left: In cab, top of rear diff, fuel module.

The extra connector is for the VLDP, not used on the CRD - just tapeit'n'fergitit..................

Dunno - duzzat apply to the '06\07 harness as well? May have to go that route to get correctly terminated weatherproof wiring

I'm getting cabin fever here in Ohio and am wondering if I could remove the harness and add the extra wires and wait for warmer weather to drop the tank :?: Can I reach the pump connector and get the cable out without dropping the tank on my 06 :?: Seems like this is a 2 stage project any how
