So we've had another bout of bad luck with Libby...

Today Butch (my significant other) called me and said that the Jeep was leaking diesel fuel. I asked if it was engine or fuel tank, and he said engine. I met him in our parking lot and sure enough it's dripping diesel all down by the transmission casing!!! I'm thinking "FARK! The Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel ate away at some injection pump seal or something and now it's got to go BACK to carmax... GREAT!"

Turns out, once I popped off the engine cover, that the return fuel line (the black little plug held in with a retaining ring) was lose and the retaining ring was missing. Popped the plug down and the engine sounded a LOT better. Also, the fuel leak was stopped...

However everything, including the airbox, has diesel fuel sprayed on it. We have a wed appointment at carmax. I'm going to ask that they clean the engine engine bay, replace the exposed belts that are now covered with diesel, and replace the air filter ... along with checking the sometimes all static satellite radio.

UGH... I smell like diesel fuel. Because of the hike in B100 we didn't refuel with B100... only about B15 in the tank...

There's a reflash for the static-y radio - the DF can be hosed down on a cold engine by tossing a dishpan fulla hot soapy water over the mess, then hosing it all down with hot water (~140degF) from the tap on the bottom of the house water heater - I use that tap for all my cleaning tasks, as it also flushes the lime\calcium\hardwater deposits from the bottom of the tank, which is recommended by the tank manufacturer to prevent rust and resultant water heater tank blowout - engine can then be cranked, warmed up to help evaporate the hot water flush

Try it - you'll like it..................

Thanks gmctd! I will give that a try once it is cold. The dealer said it is a $43 clamp and must be ordered!! Live and learn.

is it the little spring clip that holds the return line into the top of the injector? if so, PM - i can help you very easily.

When my one injector failed, it sprayed diesel all over, mainly landed up going under the vehicle. Months later when removing bolts underneath including bell housing and cross member I had diesel drip out the bolts. Suspect this diesel leak resulted in the Universal joint failing by the rear diff and the release bearing failure. Both were grease free (diesel does a good job of removing grease).

So in short try to get rid of any trace of diesel.

1/8" nylon tywrap works much better, can even get them in pink, fer a personal touch.....................

FYI - my bad on the tyrap thingie - the return-line fitting does require a real wire clip, so you done good with the paperclip - I don't get to play around with #2 son's KJ much, so I had a pic in mind of the Gm tubing, which a tyrap will do the trick - Dodge is hard steel tubing, similar to the injector pipes - apologies if my misteak cost anyone an engine..............
