I was wondering what is the difference in price between diesel and petrol (gasoline) in countries outside the U.S. Here in the U.S. diesel is anywhere from 10-25% higher then petrol. What is the difference elsewhere. It seems to me diesel shouldn't be anymore expensive to produce than petrol.

Petrol is anywhere from 94.9p per litre unleaded (thats $7.49 per gallon)
Diesel is currently 96.9 upwards $7.65 per gallon.

Scotland 15th November 2005 :(

Wow, and we complain about our $2.65 per gallon. My reason for asking the question is because it seems that the oil companies are charging an unnecessary premium for diesel over gas. I understand about supply and demand, but it seems the oil companies sure take advantage of it. I don't want to open a discussion about oil companies. I really only want to see us diesel users in the U.S. compare pricewise in the differntial cost between diesel and gas. If anybody has knowledge about the cost to produce gas vs. diesel that would be interesting.

It costs less to produce diesel than gasoline. The hurricanes that hit/narrowly missed New Orleans and Houston did some damage to processing plants and they have kept up with the gasoline demand by reducing production of diesel - which raised demand and price. That should level off until diesel is near the regular unleaded price, again. The other factor is taxes. I understand the principle motivation for the high tax on diesel is that certain politicos thought it wasn't fair for diesel to be cheaper than gasoline.

I thought it would cost less to produce diesel. The re-allocation of production does make sense. Hopefully prices will balance out, but I understand diesel is usually higher in the winter due to the demand for heating oil which is the same as diesel.

89.9p per litre of gas (£3.42 or $5.60 per US gallon) and 92.9p per litre of diesel (£3.53 or $5.85 per US gallon).

The other thing you have to remember is that diesel always goes up in the US as it gets closer to winter. For a refinery, the feed stock of diesel and home heating oil are basically the same. So for a given barrel of crude you get x gallons of diesel or heating oil. As it gets closer to winter, many refineries start making more heating oil for winter demand which results in less diesel supply, higher prices, etc. Some have said the recent price drop for diesel has been because of lower than expected demand for heating oil (warmer winter).

I'm surprised to see diesel higher than petrol overseas. I always thought the Europeans used taxes to keep diesel lower than pterol. Interesting.

They used to Chris, but now a lot people drive diesel cars over here, we're getting stung for the tax because of how much money the government can make off us:evil:

Fuel prices in South Africa varies from the coast to inland centres where transport expenses are added. The following figures are the coastal prices as at 18 Nov 2005:

Diesel (ultra low sulphur) R5.90 ($0.88 ) per litre
Diesel (standard) R5.25 ($0.78 ) per litre (at trucking depot)
Petrol (Unleaded) R5.60 ($0.835) per litre

The prices of petrol (known as gasolien in the USA) is regulated by law, but not diesel. This means that the same brand of diesel may sell for a different price at different filling stations, usually a few cent difference. Diesel can also be obtained from certain 'trucking' filling stations at a better price.

British Columbia ,Canada, Diesel Fuel $3.44 per US gallon, 2 weeks ago I think it was $3.74 (yes this is converted in U$). :(
Gas is $2.99 thus 45cts less than diesel, up to a year ago diesel was usually about 5 cents lower than gas in the summer and 5 cents more in the winter time. I 'm led to believe that we have severe tornado action in the Alberta oilsands, apparently this causes a humongous increase in the cost of refining diesel.
I developed a conspiracy theory, but won't get into that now, eh.

In Sudbury, Ontario the current prices are $.859/L CDN for gasoline, $.959/L for diesel. I'd do the conversions for ya, but it's early in the morning and my coffee fix is slow in kicking in...

The price of Diesel in the US is influenced by 2 factors.

1. Road taxes. Some states thought that the over the road truckers should pay more road taxes since they could do more damage.

2. Supply and demand. In winter the home heating oil demand raises the price of diesel since they come from the same cut of the crude oil. The Hurricaines this year kept the refineries from building up supply for winter of home heating oil.

diesel DOES cost less to produce then Gasoline. I don't have an exact dollar figure. If I did it would be way out of date since energy costs fluctuates every 5-10 seconds... You need energy to refine diesel from crude oil. Heating oil for your house, motor oil (unless it's synthetic), gas, diesel (unless it's 100% biodiesel) comes from the same source. Crude oil. Diesel fuel takes less refinemint to make then gasoline. It's a fact. Since it takes less energy to make it and less time it costs less.

Diesel sky rocketing has a real reason behind it (not just price gouging by the oil companies). When Katrina hit, it hit Louisianna (sp?). What do they have that makes a difference in fuel prices? Refineries. Lot's of em. If the hurricaine knocked out power to these places-they can't refine fuel. Supply goes down while demand is still the same. Then they got hit by another big hurricaine before there was a chance to recover. That is why we saw $3.50 per gallon in some spots. Diesel should be cheaper then gas (it was in MN up untill recently).

Our economy is based on diesel fuel. Go ahead try and prove me wrong by naming one product you own that wasn't transported by a semi...hard to do huh? Diesels are used quite heavily in the commercial world. There is not one product made entirely without diesel fuel. Think about any kind of metal and name one mine that doesn't use diesel. We NEED diesel to survive in our current economy therefore it will cost more then gas for a long time.

here in France

one french liter of diesel is about 1 euros (1,223 $)
one french liter of gasoline is about 1,25 euros (1,529 $)

1 gallon = 3,785 liter
1 liter = 0,264 gallon

here for 1 gallon of diesel we paid 3,785 l x 1,223 $ = 4,63 $
here for 1 gallon of diesel we paid 3,785 l x 1,529 $ = 5,79 $
