I live and work at 7200-9200ft above sea level and I have to ascend probably 1500-2000ft coming home from work. I cleaned my MAP and replaced my air cleaner and still no improvement. Even when I was living in Denver I was still getting about the same mileage even with a dirty MAP. Is my mileage so bad because I have to climb a mountain to get home or are there other factors? On the way up I'm at 2200rpm for about 5 miles, I swear my gauge reads about a gallon of fuel consumed.

Is 22 on average about what I should expect?

just curious, have you gotten the build sheet for your CRD?

mine listed something about "high altitude package"

But ya, 22 mpg doesn't sound bad for mountain driving like that, IMO.

Your complaining about 22mpg in a Jeep  ? I'd be happy as all h$ll if I got anywhere close to 22mpg in my KJ.

Ya, but for our CRDs that is not exceptional. Maybe you need a CRD?

As a reference point my XJ gets about 20-21 mpg driving through the mountains.

The best mileage I got, 33 mpg, was from Durango North to Ridgway and then to Cortez. All mountain >6000 feet, but mostly sub 65 mph and a lot of shifting, accelerating/braking with 4 people (~500 lbs). ??? I think this shows altitude isn't the problem.

Sorry I can't offer any suggestions.

I have a source for a brand new 2.8 without emission junk on it,look for a orange CRD converted KJ by late '09 thru early '10(gotta get the SFA done first).

Let's see...CRD (check)...Aftermarket Bumper (check)...Warn Winch (check)...Lift (check)...Mountain Route (check)...22mpg (check)

Looks like everything (check)s out to me.

You probably run taller tires too. Maybe you are not adjusting for Odometer Error.

I get about that with short highway driving (0-15 miles for most trips). What have you tried to increase mileage? Any additives? Tire pressure? Reduction in drag? Also, what are your readings based off? The Evic/odometer is off by about %6 if you have factory tires.

And it is off by even more if you are running bigger tires. Try using a GPS and computing your mileage with that. The only thing I can say that helps is the ORM/SEGR, good fuel (bad fuel drops mileage quickly) or some cetane booster, and air in the tires (37-40 psi is nice). Also, from what I have seen, the bigger tires don't hurt mileage on the highway (I think they help it some by putting the gear ratio more in line with the powerband). But they do cause me to take a hit in stop and go driving. If you can avoid the stop and go as much as possible, your mileage should go up. Along with that, the thing that really helps is to avoid fast acceleration. I can cruise at a good clip without hurting mileage, but those jack rabbit starts eat up mileage quickly.

I suppose my bumper has something to do with it but since diesel hit $4.15 up here, I have been extra easey on the throttle, maybe the ORM isn't all that great for mileage after all. My drive consists of 5 miles down 2,000ft of windy mountains pavement and my engine is still pegged at cold at the bottom, I might just try shutting the engine off and coasting those last few miles...

Actually that does add up when darby puts it that way.

I gotta say that sounds about right to me. I average 23-24mpg in mixed driving per tank once I correct for the odometer error. With all the factors involved here, plus the climb, I'm honestly suprised your getting 22mpg.

The ORM/SEGR is not magic...mostly better driveability and a cleaner engine/hoses/intercooler/oil. You might try some grill blocks to get your engine temps up and hold them. Cold is not good for mpg.

Grill Blocks like louvered doors? Good thinking!

Actually, if the CRD was a little older would not hesitate to use duct tape over the grill.
Over the road trucks have some elaborate blinds to keep the motors warm in the winter.

There's your problem right there!

Diesel engines operate off combustion (ie HEAT)! The hotter a diesel engine gets (to an limit), the more efficient it becomes.

I would replace the thermostat with a higher temp unit. Perhaps 192 degrees.

A higher opening temp won't really matter, and where would he buy such a thing for the CRD? He is not generating enough heat to open the stock t'stat as it is. I had a similar experience driving down a mountain in cold weather. Reduced airflow across the intercooler and radiator is about the only thing that is going to help the temps.
