Driving/fog lights under the rear bumper?

Hi. Gotta newbie question...

I often see KJ owners' pics with driving lights or fog lights mounted under the rear bumper. Are those usually set to go off when you put your KJ in reverse gear? ...so you can see better while driving backwards in the dark?
How did you route the wires to that location?

I haven't seen pictures like that, either that or I am just blind as can be and am not seeing it.

To expand on his questions, how do you prevent them from getting busted up?

Good question... but here's an example (hope the owner doesn't recognize this and get upset for using his KJ pic). :roll:

The light looks smaller than the exhaust pipe (if that's it next to the round holey thing), so it probably won't get taken out unless he gets the exhaust too.

Yes, you are correct. Most mods like this I have seen are like this.
I guess this type of mod is not a common thing (?)

they actually sell a backup light kit that hooks into your hitch wire harness.. it just slides into your hitch and has 2 lights on it.. a kid that i used to help with his pc gave me a set of small driving lights he was going to use on his rice rocket.. lol this guys buys stuff all the time.. well he decided not to use them so instead of returning them *go figure* he just asked me if i wanted them and i said sure.. i was going to mount them on a custom made bar that clamps on behind the hitch and hooks into the harness.. just havnt done it yet..

I've read about something called a White Night..???
Seen it mounted in the middle of the spare tire.
Can anyone expand on this?

You could remove you spare and mount a light or 2 smaller lights on the tire holder in a way that it shines through the gaps in the rim/wheel. One of our members has this set up and likes the results.

when i installed my strobe lights I lost my backup lights doing so. when i was putting everything back together i ran a wire from the backup lights down with the trailer hitch wiring. I bought the kit from advance that mounts to your hitch and it took like 20 min to install. they are so much brighter than stock. and they are still outta the way so they wont get dammaged.

JC Whitney sells them... I say "Them" because they come in 3 models.... Step Bumper, Hitch Insert (must remove to tow) and Fixed Mount (Hitch mount with pass through to allow towing while the light is installed) (gonna get this one myself).

I paid $20 for something similar to these at Autozone. However I installed a relay near the power connector in the back, and stole power and ground off of it. Then I connected the relay to the backup light wire in the trailer connector. They come on when you go in reverse, and get much more power than just hooking up to the reverse lights.

Well, I don't know about you ...but those are a bit pricey.

I think I'll just go to my local CarQuest and buy a flood light like I used to sell to all the farmers.

I know...but I don't have a local CarQuest or any of those types of auto parts stores here. Local accessories here are garbage, and the good stuff is imported so the prices are probably triple.

I need accessories that are generally 'plug-n-play'. I don't have a garage w/tools; have to park out in public to work on my KJ or have things installed by a mechanic.

I'm extremely pleased with this system. It has an ON/OFF/AUTO switch that lights up when the light is on, and the AUTO setting activates it anytime the vehicle is in reverse.

The wiring was fairly easy - except for finding the back-up light circuit.

I considered that option, but then I'd have to poke a hole in my $50 tire cover (or get rid of it), so I dismissed the idea.

But that is a really nice job you did. If I hadn't of gotten that tire cover I would have went in that direction.
