The real key to getting high mileage on a road trip is to set the cruise to 60 and let 'er roll.

west coasters would get seriously run over at 60 mph when the posted speeds are 70-75 mph. :D I've managed to get 32 mpg at 70 mph once and 33 mpg driving in the high, twisty mountain roads of SW Colorado....once all hand calculated since I don't have an EVIC.

I like Colorado.X3 i guess it is now... in my 300SD i got 27 MPG from Denver to Aspen through the MTN's

For what it's worth...
We have an 05 (I think it's an early build) with 42,000.

The vehicle was getting 17-19 economy. It had to go to the dealer to get a replacement satellite radio; well that also led me to ask them about the economy. They said there was a more recently PCM (which he said was the combined Trans. Control Module and Engine Control Module, known as the Power Control Module) firmware that was a $70 upgrade. We said do it. We'd been getting 330-360 miles to the light, we're sitting at 340 and not near the last quarter mark yet.

Might be something to ask the dealer about? For what we intended the Jeep to do (be a covered, high economy, pickup truck-replacement with no plans to tow much of anything) it is now meeting the mark. It seems we're getting at least 20MPG now.

I haven't cleaned the MAP yet; but we did replace the air and fuel filter after the second tank. 4x4 also consumes more fuel.

Good luck! Oh and try to keep the RPM gauge at 2000RPM... you'll find the sweet spot with the pedal. I noticed that taking your time and keeping it at 2000rpm vs 2500rpm makes a bit of a difference. Hardly ever (accel for interstate) do we push it to 3000rpm.

In addition to what others have said don't trust your odometer or your speedometer. My odometer is around 10% off (reading under but I am leaving it to "extend" my warranty) and my speedometer runs around 5% fast. Others have had similar experience.

Have been trying to be methodical about the mods, but, I am the poster boy of putting some things off.
My fuel mileage was 22 mpg when I picked it up. Now it is 18-19mpg. I thought it was my heavy foot.
It was the MAP.... I hope.
It was completely covered up, a turd in the CRD.
My son has the motor cover proudly on his wall, he did the dirty work, good lad, thanks.

Verify the accuracy of your odometer with a GPS. Mine is low by 13.5%. That totally screws up your mileage calculations.

Anyone know anything about this firmware upgrade?

Go to the CRD Tech section and read the third thread down. Not much data yet. You can't rely on update stickers being put on and or being correct  There's also more then one ECM used  Untill more data is gathered it's a crap shoot. Step one is getting the software revision of your ECM and TCM and posting them on that thread :D I you own VAG-COM or know someone that does it will read that data. While in the Tec section section there's another thread about what scan tools will/will not read different types of data

There must have been a bad batch of CRDs with messed up calibration on the speedo/odo. 13.5% off from the factory??? That's insane. I GPS verified my '05 CRD many times and the speedo/odo were perfect.

Also, in ALL of the Chrysler products I've been in, if you have the overhead console with fuel mileage display it will be accurate if you reset it with each fillup. I have always used the overhead display AND hand calculated my mileage, and the overhead console is within .2 mpg every time. I reset it with each fresh fillup and it's perfect.

23-25 mpg was always my average doing a mix of city and highway driving. Towing 6,750 lbs. total load I got 14 mpg. Pure interstate trip to Florida from Kentucky got 26 or so. There is something VERY wrong with a CRD that's just driven daily and gets mileage in the mid teens. Air pressure in the tires, air filter...stuff like that will not make a 5-10 mpg difference. You have a real problem with the engine and/or tranny.
