Holy hannah, I don't want to know what that would be like

But still, 5200 RPM would be wickedly scary.

I've hit 8k in my TTs a couple of times(7k redline), made an ungodly noise at those RPM!

I've run them to 5k before but it takes some fuel to do it... Not the smoothest for sure but it'll do it. Sort of like a Cummins as it passes through it's natural harmonic frequency, shakes and then smoothes out again.

I've spent too much time riding motorcycles I guess.

I don't even shift my track bike until it hits about 13,000 rpm. :)

It redlines at 14,500.

I wonder why diesels redline so low? Seems that they would at least run up to 5252rpm, where the torque curve and HP curve would cross.

Is it a piston speed thing or what?

I believe it's a speed of burn thing. Diesel just doesn't burn real fast (and we don't have an external ignitor) and it takes some time (relatively) for the combustion to proceed throughout the cylinder.

I thought our engine controllers started pulling the fuel out at over 4400 rpm.

Yes, diesel burns a lot slower than gasoline. Also, the heavier, more durable
pistons, rods, crank etc. add to the reciprocating weight, further slowing
down the rpm's.

The bigger a diesel engine gets, the lower its redline and the lower its peak
torque rpm.
Take EMD's 710 engine (locomotive) for example. Its a 2-stroke, V16,
turbo diesel with 710 cubic inches per cylider. It makes max power at 900
rpm, idles about 400, redline probably around 1200.
