First 100 miles report with new in tank lift pump.

I wish I could quantify the improved performance I have gotten with this mod, but I am left with qualitative judgment instead.

It feels like I am getting better throttle response during moderately hard acceleration,,, kinda like the the effect of the turbo kicking in, lasting longer.

Also, with the TC locked, the low RPM hard acceleraion feels and sounds much more smooth... no stuttering. going up hill, accelerating hard seems better than before.

The EVIC MPG has climbed up a bit, and maybe this is due to the fact that I am getting better efficiency from my typical jack-rabit driving (just cant help it with this low rpm torque!).

Worth every penny! Thanks to all the contributors!

Picked up the electrical repair kit for the 06 Liberty gasser fuel pump today.
Included: male 4 pin plug, pins, wire pieces and heat shrink tubing.
The part number is 5013978-AA Wiring
But I could not find the part number any where else, got it from the $tealership.
All the parts I need to wire in the pump to the CRD minus 66 inches of 16-18 gauge wire, sheet metal screw and ground connector.

Ok, now I’m confused.
I went to www.moparpartsamerica.com and put in 05 Dodge 3500 truck diesel, and it comes up with two choices.
I called their 800 number and talked to the nice man and he asked me if I have had the mod done yet?
I asked what mod?
He stated that there was a modification done to the tank and that’s why there are two listings for the pump. The 34 and 35 gallon tank. Both are $ 156.21. He then asked me for my VIN and he said he could tell me which one for sure that I needed.
Sorry but I don't have a VIN that will work for him.

So which one do I (or we) want?

Turbo Tim,

I don"t think it matters which one you get. they are both the same part number at the general parts store.
i have been after them for a bit about the pump. he distributor even asked where the parts guy got
the part number cause they don't even have the part yet.

Any particular reason you didn't use the often-posted part number that the rest of us used - something 'special' about yer Jeep, that you need a special pump, Mr SEGR-designer???????

Well??????????

Hi Rob,

Interesting way to go. What was the cost? Does it give you all the terminal pins needed for both pump ground and power?

Chris,
Am ashamed to write just how much I paid, but, this forum is about learning soooo.......$33.98.
I was very happy to get it though.
The expression, 'a fool and his money are soon parted,' only came to mind later.
The parts guy did know his parts.....But I ended up with only females, and you need a male...
Yes, it came with all the goodies necessary except what I mentioned as needed.
Lots of extra female ends. Ha, ha, ha, ha, for $33.98, ha, ha, ha, sob, sob.
I later found the repair kit on moparamerica.com for about $19 plus shipping. Do not forget to put the AA after the number to get the part listing. List price is $25. 5013978-AA Wiring

Hi Rob,

I for one didn't even know this route existed. Collectively, we thank you for finding this alternative. Your extra dollars paid for good karma.

Well "I" just started going backwards on the pages here until I got to page 18. Figured it was the most current and followed the link, and thought I would be done with it.
NOPE, don’t work that way. I should have known better.
So instead of sending GMCTD a PM, I thought I would post here for all to see that there are a few bugs in following the instructions. (As “Mr. SEGR” I should have just gone with my first instinc and go to a real parts house but I was cheap and went to a cheap parts house. They don’t have any, and I thought I would just use the internet. Then this had to come up so here I am posting again).

So the real question is: What is the “Real” part number we should be looking for?
What is this fuel tank mod? Apparently it doesn’t affect what we are doing, right?
Any good sources with stock in hand?
Any good prices less than $200 ?

My post was done tongue-in-cheek style as usual, Tim, meant to impart information, but context not to be taken seriously - anyway, farzino, this is the only number(s) posted, besides the number on the pre-owned '06 fuel module in my pics:

Module, Fuel Pump 2005 Dodge 3500 Cummins
5143160AA $156.21

WIRING, FUEL TANK 2006 LIBERTY 3.7L
56047848AB $51.78

WIRING, FUEL TANK 2005 LIBERTY 3.7L
56050284AB $35.85

Might aks'em to look up the TSB, see what is the actual 34\35gal difference - that may be the difference in fuel level readings with the new modules, compared to my pre-owned module.

gmctd,

i think the two options are to make it a PITA for those of us that go and ask a dealer about
a part, for the parts guy only to say that there is no difference in the part numbers for the
vehicles. i mean how much of a difference in thickness can there be with one gallon spread
over maybe about 250 to 300 sq.in. area?

What if it's spread over a 1-gallon area, such as the lift pump area, done to eliminate air pockets - could still make a 'nuff difference in the float angle to be obvious in a 20-gal tank

Ripster & gmctd,

You guys are tops! Those pictures of ripsters and the plain-as-can-be explaination of wiring by gmctd could not have made altering the new '05 gasser harness any easier. I did it last night and it was smooth as silk. I am waiting on a low fuel tank, on a week end, with time to do the pump install to finish the modification. Funny but the thing that bothers me most is the removal of the back seat and carpet pull back. Pretty stupid huh? The tractor goes an easy 450 miles without the light coming on and I just had to fill it last Sat. thinking oil was going to go up with the gas prices (28.2 mpg that tank). It has not so far. figures! What would we do without this site?

P.S. If the fuel guage is off by 1/4 tank, I can live with that. The trip meter can warn me if I am getting close and running the tank down low does not sound good for the new pump anyway. If I need to be finding a station with the guage at 1/4 or 1/2 even, what more do I need to know?My S10 blazer stayed on full for a long time then sank like a brick when it left full. Got used to it and didn't let it bother me. I luv this truck!

Got started, Thanks Dieseldawg and Ripster for your description and pictures for disassembling the connectors. Dropping the tank was easy, its sitting on the garage floor right now with the new lift pump installed. I broke the clips that hold the fuel lines to the tank, anyone know if these are common parts?

I'm working on getting the back seat out now to finish the wiring. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok, no response, everyone must be at work. Wiring is complete and reinstalled- was not difficult at all having disassembled the 05 gasser harness before hand. 05 gasser harness is definitely about 6 inches shorter than the 05 CRD harness.

I'm getting ready to put the tank back in, I think I'm just going to replace the factory connectors with fuel line and clamps

Other than the general neatness of the factory solution, is there any benefit to going this route over installing a Facet-type lift pump?

I'm not really having any air in fuel issues (yet) with the stock set up, but $200+ seems steep to me if cheaper (albeit less attractive) options are out there.

I like the stock functionality of the 25 second "on then off" when the ignition is on, but the engine off. This is a safety feature (stops pumping after an accident, for instance). This is also useful for system priming (filter changes).

Main benefit of external aux LP is ease of maint\replacement - just connect it as the in-tank version to get the prime function with saftey logic - make sure it's flow-thru when fail, or yer stranded
