Given the high price of fuel now, has anybody tried the Mopar locking gas cap that is keyed to match your ignition key PART # 5016763AE rather than the small (2 key set) 5278655AB?

I was told that the TJ version will work with the Liberty tanks. Anybody try this?

The small keys look flimsy and may break in the cold.

$60+ for a GAS CAP?! :o :o Are you serious? I picked up a Stant locking gas cap (P/N 10508) as soon as gas hit $3.00. It cost me less than $15. The key is durable enough, however in the cold, the cover on the key slot did tend to freeze up. I took it off and put a little WD-40 on it and worked it in a bit, now she works smoothly. My only complaint is that there is no way to attach my factory lanyard to it so I can hang it on the hook when fueling. It goes up on the roof now, and I'm afraid one of these days I'll have a brain-fart and leave it up there  . So far so good, anyway *knocking on wood*

I have the Mopar cheap version and its 'ok.' The first one I got from jparts never did work right and of course the dealer wouldnt take it back. I ended up buying another one so now I have a non working on and a working one. Im thinking about taking the one thats broken back with the receipt since they have a one year warranty IF you keep the receipt. The way I look at it, its not really cheating them b/c they sold me a cap that didnt work.

If they want to get in your tank with this gas cap they will. If I push down really hard on it and turn it pops right off. :?

Yup. Hopefully they'll see the key hole and walk away without trying. But if they do try, the cap is no harder to get off than a non-locking one. :|

Haha, I love the Trunk Monkey! I experimented with my Stant cap and figured there is no way to get it off without the key, unless you go to extreme measures of course. It "free-wheels" unless the key is used and even with my small hands, I couldn't get into the cap compartment enough to get a really good grip to wrench it off. I think one wold need to do some serious tooling on it to get it to come off, and no gas thief will waste their time - they'll just move on to the next vehicle! As far as security goes, I'm pretty happy with it.

Savage,

How long have you been using the Stant locking cap?

One of the things the dealer said when I wanted the Mopar locking gas cap that is keyed to match your ignition key PART # 5016763AE, he said that it may not provide a proper seal which may result in a Check Engine light due to a poor seal in the fuel tank. Was there any sign of this with the Stant model?

I see Stant has several models... how do you know the 10508 was the best fit model?

This is the second one Ive had so I would think its not defective. Guess it could be though.

FWIW, I got the Mopar locking gas cap at the dealer. I think it was around $12. or so. I was afraid if I messed around with aftermarket ones it might start throwing codes or something if it didn't seal right. Anyway, I havn't had any trouble with it. The 2 small keys are a pain but I just put one on each of my key chains.

Like was said before, it's just a visual deterrent anyway. Some turd looking for gas will keep looking until they found an easier unlocked one to deal with anyway since they will probably be in a hurry.

I just read on Jeepforum that you cannot siphon gas out of the kj since it has a anti-siphon valve(AKA, check valve).

This makes sense b/c I tried to siphon gas out of it for the lawn mower and I couldnt get any out. Got some out of the boat just fine though!

Okay, I will try the regular gas cap then. Good to know if the cheap flimsy key breaks off in the cap in cold weather ... I can just push down to open it

Is there anyway to tether it to the door like the OEM cap?

In Canada, some of the stealerships want $130 for the cap which matches the ignition key and then another $50 to cut the key!!! You need to check around

That is like three tank fillups!!!
