True, but books aren't always the be all-end all solution - to wit:
I converted my '89 6.2L GMC to an EFI 6.5TD engine, staying with the oem T400 3spd auto trans - the 6.2, 400, 454 all used the same T400 and D4 torque convertor quite efficiently - however, the turbo'ed 6.5L was way more than the D4 could handle, so the stall speed went way up - was like driving the old Buick Dynaflow, with engine flare at any event, no fuel mileage - the D4 was GM's most agressive t\c for the T400, and had no lockup - woe is me, what to do, what to do?
So, I waltzed meself into the local T\C house, collared the Owner\Boss, tole 'im what I needed, and he said same thing: D4 is it, for the T400 - aksed 'im if I could do a walk-about, get some ideas, so we proceeded - I knew what the D4 internals looked like so wasn't long B4 ole eagle eyes spotted a likely prospect, which he identified as the upgraded t\c for the Dodge Torqueflyte with the Cummins engine - were some slight differences, but more similarities, to which he informed me that it was made by the same company that made the GM D4 - diameter, depth, turbine, impeller, stator had obvious differences due to the Torqueflyte input shaft and stuff, but very similar - aksed 'im if this couldn't be altered here, changed there, reworked back here, etc, to which he replied affirmatively - he mentioned many GM wrecker drivers had inquired along those lines, but he hadn't spent any time investigating it, being the Boss, and all - week later I had my super-vertor, real aggressive hookup, stall speed just off idle, acted like it was in lockup - soon developed same problems the Dodge dudes were having: T400 trans ran unbelievably hot - put a dual-probe in\out guage on the 'cooler lines and it was steaming - aux cooler didn't help, as greatest temp increase was at idle at stop in DRIVE - thus, the technique of shifting to NEUTRAL at every stop became a necessity - really had to stand on the brakes to keep the big rig fully stopped, in any gear.
Anyways, I did mention that books don't always have the answers, right?
