 Post subject: driveshaft(from the front t-case output to the front diff

Can I remove the front driveshaft(from the front t-case output to the front diff) and drive like that for a few weeks?
Ofcourse make sure I cover the open holes well so nothing gets in.

If I remove it tempary and drive on it, will is stop the front CV's and half shafts from spinning with tourqe?

other words will it free wheel with out the t-case supplying power to the fron half shafts?

I am having problems with my front drive train system and Jeep cant seem to figure it out. I am at 119xxxK so I am out of warranty and slowly money too. I want to remove it and see if my problem still apears. if so then I know it is cv's and half shafts and maybe wheel bearings.

Not sure how long is usually recommended to keep it out while still driving it, but when I had mine out it didn't leak a drop. I didn't drive it anywhere except for around the block, and it just sat in the garage while I waited for the new driveshaft to arrive.

I took it out due to some knocking in the front which I think is a bad cv joint, axle shaft, or axle shaft bearing, yada yada yada....knocking was totally gone. Put a brand new front ds assembly in, and the noise came right back.

Sooo, now I'm looking at doing the CVs, axle shafts, axle shaft bearings, and axle shaft bearing seals shortly and am checking which parts I will need to buy and from where.

The front half-shafts will continue to turn even with the front propeller shaft removed - the disconnect for the 4WD system is in the t-case itself, so everything in the front end freewheels in 2WD. The mounting flanges for the front diff and the t-case are both bolted in so they are not going to move. You wouldn't want to drive forever with the prop shaft out but I drove mine for a couple of weeks with no problems at all.

EDIT: and yes if you took the prop shaft out and continued to hear the noises it would indicate a problem in the CVs/halfshafts. Good luck!

Thats what I was thinking. I remember I had a problem with my TJ a few years ago with the front shaft snapping off about ever 10k miles. That was an insane ordeal I went though. I pulled the shaft and drove like that for a while until it was fitured out. That was also SFA and not an IFS.


Seems how the dealer just replaced my drive shaft 3 days ago and the problem still happens, They are going to look at it. and if it is the cv's and half shafts, I am going to tell them put the KJ on the ground, give me back my money for a repair that I did not need and I am going to napa and buy what I need and do it my self.

I already priced out the cv's and half shafts for both sides. I also included the wheel bearing just incase. Cost will be less than 400 bucks. $700. if I buy the wheel bearing. dealer probally would charge 2,000 for parts and labor.

From what I've read, you can try and diagnose the wheel bearing by doing a quick swerve in both directions while driving slowly to see if the noise goes away during one of the swerves.

Another way to check the bearing is to jack up the front end, and see if there is any side-to-side play in the wheel itself.

ive been driving around without a front shaft since november. its all sealed and bolted in so theres nothing to worrk about. i think tjkj did it for about a year

I think it should be okay. It shouldn't leak. Just don't put it in 4-wheel drive.
