Only consolation was the EVIC read 506 miles to empty...

How many out there have hit $100 for a fill?

Question...how did you get 21.11 gallons into a 20.5 gallon tank? I didn't think that was mathematically possible.

He filled it into the neck... the tank is pretty low under the truck. I think .8 gallons would fit in there easily.

That's insane. My '04 Ram has a 26 gallon tank and gets low teens for mileage..I usually hit empty before filling it...and I've never put $90 into it yet. (Gas is $3.66 here though). He must have actually had it to the point you could stick your finger in there and get it wet! I can't believe he got that much into a KJ.

On a side note, they say that running your tank that low before filling is very stressful on the pump and can shorten it's life considerably. Most people recommend filling the tank at the 1/4 mark.

WTF? $4.31 to $4.34 in 24 hrs?

The problem with our fuel gages is when you hit 1/4 mark you're empty.

well On my 05 dodge ram diesel It is shown to have a 36 or 38 gallon tank and I have put 41 in it and it was still running when I pulled into the station... the liberty on the other hand usually costs the wife 60-75 dollars to fill but she doesn't wait till the light is on either.. can't trust it with an 8 month old baby in back. It would be a long walk with baby in tow!!

Your truck is a freak of nature then because the largest tank available from the factory on the Rams is 34 gallons. So if you put 41 gallons in, you better check to see how much is running out of the hole in the bottom. 8)

Besides the stress on the pump from letting it go so low, the other reason to fill up a CRD at the 1/4 mark is because sometimes it's hard to find a station that sells diesel. And you don't want to be running around looking for diesel when the fuel light is on the dash...did that too many times myself.

I'd do some checking of the pump - it sounds like he is being ripped off...

Indeed. I could believe an extra 1/2 to 1 gallon if you crammed it up to the cap. But even crediting the truck with a 36 to 38 gallon tank, and then the pump registering 41, that's 3 to 5 gallons past rated capacity, on top of which he still had to have at least a couple gallons in the tank for the truck to still be running - in the range of 5 to 7 gallons past rated capacity.

Only other explanation, apart from the station owner being an outright thief, is along the line of what VW TDI owners discovered - VW used the exact same fuel tank on both the gassers and TDI's, with the same vent system and void space for vapor expansion - the TDI owners found out that if they rerigged the vent system they could safely put in an extra 2 or 3 gallons of diesel as they didn't need the vapor void that the gassers did.

As much as the former DC loved cost cutting, I could see them using the same fuel tank as the gassers and leaving the advertised capacity as per the gasoline version - when in actuality on the diesel version with a different vent system you could fit in several more gallons.

I'd say the gent needs to talk with some other Cummins owners to see if they've seen anything similar. Might just end up being the nature of the beast.

well just filled up the truck today and it was $146.00 at 4.15/gal which is 35 gals. It wasn't even empty it was about half way between e and 1/4. Hopefully the last fill up till it sells. But the wife is getting sick of me using "her" jeep to pull my trailer around so I figured I would pony up and buy some fuel for the next few weeks.

Here in KY, gas is still going up ($3.70 lately) but diesel has stopped rising. It's been holding steady at $4.15 or so for weeks.

Diesel may be crazy expensive, but based on quick research at KBB and Edmunds, our CRDs are still worth thousands more than a comparable gas model. That is good news as I thought the prices on diesel vehicles might have collapsed.

-------------------------
CRD
25 MPG - 4.25 per gal= 0.17 cents per mile
Gasser
15 MPG - 3.80 per gal= 0.25 cents per mile.

Same vehicle, different powerplants, but yes, it is still cheaper for us.
Still, my cost per mile has risen from 0.10 to 0.17 per mile but that has
applied to all auto owners.
Some gassers may jump on this for their mileage as not correct, but thats
the way I see it and I have records to prove it. I have seen some
posts on the gasser side way above 15mpg but the internet lies sometimes.

I love my CRD.
Steve

My 98 Durango only got 12 mpg most of the time, 16 best on highway with 5.2l engine. The worst I got with the CRD is 19 just driving back and forth to work a few miles at a time. The best is 32 on the highway. I was filling the Durango every week to 25 gallon tank compare the the CRD 20 gallon tank every two weeks.

12 vs 19 = 37% better

16 vs 32 = 50% better

$3.70 vs $4.25 = 15% worse

37% - 15% = 22% better

50% - 15% = 35% better

Huh, I'm not quite that lucky. I've recorded almost every fillup since I got mine last Sept, and registered a low of 11.8 and a high of 32.8 mpg. Two days apart. (One was commuting, one was highway.) I've noticed temperature makes a huge difference. I've dropped, and am now picking up again, 3-4 mpg from last fall, through winter, back into spring on my commute. I suppose part of this is due to fluids turning to pudding, and part due to extended driveway warm-ups. I'd say so far I've averaged about 16-17 mpg. That bugs me a little because I drive very gently, almost never touch 2k on the tach, and the ground is flat as a pancake. It's a short trip though. Hopefully in the summer it will be around 20. On the highway it's usually been around 26 mpg at 55-60, but I wouldn't say I've been able to test that enough times to be sure that's consistent. I previously had a '99 Suzuki Vitara (2.0L, auto, 4wd) that would get about 22/32 under these same conditions.

wow have you ever cleaned your MAP sensor or done the ORM or any sort of MPG improver? because with my lift and everything on mine I am still averaging 18-19 around town. and about 25-26 on the freeway.

11.8?? I towed/hauled nearly 7K lbs. with my CRD up hills in Tennessee and still got 14. You must have spent all your time idling. That's crazy.

Well the worst I got was 14 mpg towing 3,000 lbs through the rockies mountains, 19 mpg over all cross country. I don't know what the Durango would do in the same conditions but I bet single digit.
