For those of you that have done this already, how does the face trim come out? I usually install my own stuff but this time I went to have the local shop do it and after getting a $420 quote (installed with accessories) on a $280 radio, I just don't think I can pony up for that much! That's crazy people can charge so much for such an easy job. Any way, any help/diagrams would be appreciated!

well, you cant get the crutchfield guide online. you have to pay $5 and have it sent to you and i doubt i still have the one they sent me. that was over a year ago. but, i found this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_remove_the_radio_from_a_2002_jeep_liberty

it really is that easy... :D

lol, thanks! I figured it was just wanted to make sure before I dove into it. I'll have this entire thing bought and installed and have enough money left over to buy another stereo for what they were wanting!

It's pretty easy really

1) Undo the screw at the bottom of the center bezel. Mine is behind the ashtray that newer models don't have. I think there is a pocket there now?
2) Pry from the bottom first
3) then the middle
4) then the top
5) The HVAC controller is screwed to the center bezel. Undo the vacuum tubes and harness to the HVAC controller and set the center bezel aside
5a) Unplug the 12v power outlet harness from the back of the center bezel
6) Use philips screwdriver to remove 4 screws that secure the radio to the IP
7) Pull radio
8. Unplug radio
9) Installation is the reverse of this process.

It just pops off.....no, not on its own....unless you have Gremlins.

Do you have everything to make the new HU look nice (trim)?

I forgot to add into my list the power plug wire harness. I've gone back and added it in.

You and me both... I keep talking about it to the wife and she keeps rolling the eyes. So I put it off for another year.

I'd love to see pictures of the new equipment when you get everything back together though.

Will do, nothing special really though. LINK The biggest reason for the change is my Ipod! It's seen very little use lately so I'm upgrading and setting it up to the HU so I'll actually use it again!

My wife wants me to upgrade my system,
but I keep putting it off due to the only time its ever used is when she is in there with me.

lol, I'm being rather mild this time around only a single 10 under the rear bench and upgrading the doors. Nothing like the 4 15" solo-barics in the bronco from my HS days!

How are you fitting a 10 under the back seat? I'd REALLY like to see...need some space-conscious sub ideas.

I hear ya Jersey but when you start installing $1000 systems the older I get the more I think about the warranty of the stuff as well. Until they try to charge me twice what the HU is of course!

ThunderBird,

It's quite easy actually just cut a hole in the bottom of the jeep and let it hang out!

No really, I'm going with the Premier shallow mount subs. Premier 10" Shallow-Mounts

Kicker also makes a shallow mount you could check out. Kicker CVT10

I've seen both and the Premier series is a LOT beefier and looks to be built a bit more sturdy.

Those shallow subs look nice! It's been a long time since I've had a decent stereo in my ride. I don't mind the stock, but sometimes it just doesn't seem to do it for me 8). A shallow 10 would be nice under the rear seat.

140 for the install is a bit much. You do need the wire harness and radio mount. Oh and don't forget the Antenna extender. The accessories should cost you around 60.
