revs, then there's a whoosh sound and loss of power

Just like the title says, our '06 CRD revs, then there's a slight whoosh sound and loss of power and the engine stumbles. Then it sounds fine and I can rev again, but each time the same thing happens. The whoosh sound appears to be coming from the drivers side, but it's hard to tell since I hear it when the window is down. It idles and revs (in park) just fine. The engine light is on, but the auto store is closed (they advertise that they will scan codes for free). If I can limp my way over there tomorrow I'll get those for you.
My searches have brought up the possibility of a faulty intercooler hose, but the connections seem to be on good and tight. I can't find any obvious cracks in them. How obvious would a failure be? Should I remove them for a more thorough inspection?

Random details that matter matter:
-60k miles
-ran beautifully this morning
-Almost new fuel filter (which I bled today but it didn't make any difference)
-I cleaned the MAP sensor (made no difference)
-I cleaned the sensor in the intake air tube last week
-no engine mods have been done yet

"Rev" followed by "whoosh" == blown hose between turbo->intercooler->engine(intake/afc?)

If you can have someone run the throttle, you may be able to see/feel during the whoosh as the burst of air makes the hairline crack grow. If the crack is on the underside of the hose, it could be difficult to spot.

Or, I suppose the old fashioned way would be to remove the hoses and inspect them. Typically, the oil from the crankcase causes the rubber to degrade over time and fail.

It could also be that the hose clamps popped loose, but my vote is the hose itself.

The whoosh is due to all the air that should be going into the engine under pressure (boost) escaping through a crack in the hose.

The loss of power is due to a diesel without boost, combined with a turbo restricting both intake and exhaust (way more lag, because the boost isn't helping to spool up the turbo through the exhaust side). Bit of a "rag stuffed in the exhaust" effect...

That was my thinking. I went online and found an autozone that was open late and ran out and borrowed their scanner. I get the following codes:

P0299 underboost
P0401 EGR flow insufficient
P0101 MAF or VAF A CRT range/perf

Guess I know what I'll be doing tomorrow morning.

How hard is it to get replacement hoses? Does the dealership have to order them?

Pete this is the classic sound of a blown turbo hose.

Inspect it and see which one it is.

If your still under warrantee get it fixed via the dealer, if not post back with which one is blown and we may be able to help.

No warranty on it so that's out. Would it be worthwhile to just replace both of them? It's my dad's daily driver and I don't want to deal with this again in another thousand miles. Plus it's his money.

You should check the thread about the Samco hoses, much better product that will not fail like this.

Dealer prices are really high.

Check and see which one needs to be replaced now, and where it is bad. You may be able to patch it or one of us may have a spare for you.

Hopefully we will have the samco hoses for purchase soon(knock on wood).

Well, the drivers side blew a tear about 3 inches long on the underside where it enters the engine, near but not touching the hose clamp. The tear runs along the hose rather than around it. Any thoughts?

yes this is typical, how quickly do you need a replacement?

Now would be nice. I leave Monday for a trip to my sister's place in Georgia. I'm not taking the Jeep, but that means I'll no longer available to fix it for my dad (who leaves a few days later and is taking the Jeep). Dealer says they have one in stock for about $100. Oddly enough their "cost" is more than that moparpartsamerica site has listed as msrp, but at this point getting the Jeep running again is more important than splitting hairs on price.
Right about now would be a good time for Samco to announce they are ready to ship.

I'm not sure what the samco holdup is, and it is rather annoying trying to get anywhere on this buy right now.

If your sister lives near Atlanta, bring your hoses along and I'll help you find the leak (I'm in North Metro). You can do a little "Ghetto-patching" with exhaust patch or some high-quality duct tape......temporarily.

Finding the leak wasn't hard once I had the hose off the Jeep. There's a huge gash in the bottom.

I'm attempting my own "fix" tonight using a combo of radiator-fix tape, metal tape, and hose clamps. Still hoping for a reply from the guy that might have a used hose.
I appreciate the offer though.

Yay! I heard back from the Jeeper in CO and he's going to send me his used one. That should tide us over for at least 'til they get back from the trip and then we can reevaluate what to do.
