As the subject says, every time i check my oil, the tranny dipstick is consistently unseated or outright 1-2 inches out of the hole, what gives? Should i just slap some tape on that sucker?

Kinda feels like the dipstick is acting like a spring and maby it just gets banged around and out she slips.

I believe that the vent in your transmission is clogged.
The vent was probably installed at manufacture improperly and is now clogged.
I invoke the great and mighty Gmctd as the source in case I am wrong blame him, if correct,.. well....blame him anyway.

Took mine in under warranty. Mechanic said dip stick should have a lock on it: Not well designed for diesel vibrations. He crimped something and called it good. 3K miles since all is OK.

Many post ago a member mentioned about putting a small bend in the dip stick several inches below the handle that solved that problem about a year ago

Mine is doing the same thing.....I was wondering why as well. I will put a bend in the dipstick and see if it works.

Thanks !

Don't do anything to that dipstick. It's not necessary. Since the dipstick is curved along its way up, the joint in the middle acts as a spring and will unwind when under vibration. Pull all of the dipstick up (the whole 5 feet of it) and turn it 180degrees and put it back in. This way it will stay where it is supposed to be because the joint is allowed to open up instead of bending the dipstick in the curve it follows.

I had the same problem 6 months ago, but after turning the dipstick I have none.

Just asking a question since you are in Europe don't you have a different transmission than we do in the States?

I've got a 545RFE transmission all right. Differences are that my 03 doesn't have a VGT, doesn't have electrically controlled EGR, has an air-proof fuel filter head, 4.1 diff ratio, 70l fuel tank (78 on 05/US models) and I have no electric fan on my CAC.

I had the same problem and took it to my guys who replaced the dipstick but the problem remained. They ended up calling the states and they said to extend the breather (what the dipstick goes into) of which they did and it has been fine ever since..... fingers crossed.

Ok, transsexual jokes aside  , i have located what appears to be the breather tube for the t-case, and have been unable to locate similar that terminates into the transmission.

Is there a thread with information about breather tube locations, and possibly advice on breather extension? If i'm going to pull it to check, I may as well extend em all.

For now i just d-taped the dipstick in place. I suspect that in the past it would simply catch on the engine cover, witch now adorns the wall in my living room. In hindsight, if the breather is indeed clogged, taping the dipstick in place may have been a bad idea.

Thanks for your help!
