Just tried to remove the driveshaft and can't figure out how to get the darn thing off! First off mine is a solid clamp bolted on to a round plate by 4 bolts not like the diagram in my repair manual that shows 2 seperate U clamps holding it on. I got the 4 bolts off and have tried just about everything I can think of to get it off and it won't budge. What is the trick?

Thanks,
Jake

Jake,
First unbolt the ujoint straps/ bolts that holds the driveshaft to the rear diff. Second undo clamps that hold on dust boot on the front slip yoke. Push driveshaft forward toward the transfer case. It might require a bit of force as the ujoint in the rear could be tight in the yoke. Use a pry bar/ screwdriver in the rear ujoint to assist it abit. Once the rear ujoint is free, lower it and pull the driveshaft back. The drive shaft spline will be visible. Put some grease on the splines and follow the reverse procedure to put it back together.

hope that helps, mike

Mike,

Finally got to it today and as you said it just needed a little help with a screwdriver to pry it loose. Cleaned it and greased it with Lucas's red-n-tacky and all seems well.

Thanks,
Jake

what did you do about the boot over the splines? Did you just use pipe clamps to put it back on or what?

I used zip ties to strap the boot back in when I changed my u-joints. So far its held up well.

I just used a zip tie like jeepkj02 did. If I come across a lightweight plastic screw type clamp I'd use that but the zip tie works quite well.

Is there any particular reason for doing this? Just asking not being mean or anything. I have an 02 and wondering if this is something i should be doing to prolong anything on the drive line???

I did because I had a clunking sound when I came to a stop. Many said it was drive train slack but others said the splines needed greased. In my case, the splines needed greased because the clunk is now gone. :D

well, the slack in the splines causes the slack in the drivetrain. That driveshaft is part of the drivetrain you know. :)
