KJ stays still when in drive mode and no gas/brakes applied

Hey all-

i just bought a KJ about 2 weeks ago and so far it has been a great car with no problems. There is one thing bothering me however...when I put the car in drive I don't get the normal torquey forward movement you have with most automatic transmissions. Basically I dont drive forward unless I push on the gas! This is a little annoying when I am trying too nudge as close too the garage door as possible because im afraid i am going too drive in too the door!

I am wondering if maybe my brakes are staying slightly on enough too keep me from having my torque roll. No squeaking or any symptoms of this yet.

hopefully this post makes sense.

is this normal with KJ's?

Depending where I am sitting mine does the same thing and I know for a fact that my brakes are adjusted/working correctly. If you put it in Neutral at a light and it rolls on it's own you are OK. Of course, this will not happen at every light. Hope this helps...

yep this helps. i didnt think about that neutral test, ill have too try it next time on on a slight incline/decline. thanks man

mine does the same and no problems with the brakes or anything. it can be anoying but all is good.

you have to fiqure that you have at least 4000 lbs sitting there, it is not going to roll freely by itself like say a 2000 lb Civic or what ever those pieces of plastic weigh. Not picking on Civics just know they are pretty light

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's typical for the KJ's with the 42RLE transmission. I know mine with the 45RFE will actually crawl up a slight incline by simply taking my foot off the brake.

ours will roll in D with no gas
'03 still not sure what tranny we have it was one of the first '03 off the line so who knows
we also have 245/75 MTR's to boot so maybe we do have a 45RFE

I have the 42RLE with 265/75's and mine will roll forward unless I'm on an incline.

i have noticed that on mine there is no idle, even on flat roads when the engine is warm and its at its normal idle speed. i figured it was normal...

My 04 (not sure which tranny) acts the same way... level ground, no brake, no gas, it just sits there.

My '05, 42RLE, level ground, will roll forward and backward. On slight incline, will not roll forward (uphill).

Heck, I (and others) even have trouble reversing out of potholes but that's just the 42RLE acting up ...

Learn to drive with two feet in tight spots. Nevermind what they taught you in drivers-ed, just don't ride the brakes on the road.

i have noticed my 05 will do that sometimes. i dont know about an incline or know im gonna put it up to test know im curious.

Try to find a four- to five-inch deep hole in the ground and let your front tires sit in it for a while, say 30 minutes or so and see if you can reverse out of it
