I'm pretty sure traction control wasn't meant for offroad. I've heard they just overwork themselves trying to correct all the traction issues when doing some decent stuff off-road. The only thing that'll keep your wheels spinning all the time (what you want, off-road) is a locker, or two. I'm pretty sure traction control won't do this. There are electronic lockers, I think the Commander has the option for a rear one.
I think traction control is more of a marketing thing, not to say that it doesn't do anything. Joe Schmoe just likes to hear it so he knows his wife won't end up in a ditch when it rains. I know that if it helped a lot off-road, you'd see rock-crawlers with it, instead of something really useful like a 4:1 transfer case.
Good ole' "part-time" and 4-lo, with the help of lockers here and there, got Jeep where it is today...ironically that's now "traction control"
