Is the oil pan drain plug supposed to have a rubber washer on it from the factory?

Sump pan plugs usually have either a copper or plastic washer or ocassionally the fibre ones (like the ones supplied with fumoto valves) i personally have never seen a rubber one.

Not sure about the CRD KJ but almost all other Chrysler vehicles has a rubber washer on the plug(the gasser KJ does),and so does almost all GM vehicles. But like JIMMY JEEP said it could have a copper, fiber,or plastic washer also.

Well,

I bought my Jeep used so I don't know what someone has done in the past, but mine has a regular hex bolt and a rubber washer. It's now dripping, so I don't know what to do? Maybe order the washer from mopar and buy a fumoto?

Pete

Where is the best place to buy a Fumoto, I see that I will need to buy the "adapter" also from doing some reading. It looks like they already come with the seals needed. I tried calling Greg (Lubrication Specialists) but he is out until June 19th :( Any suggestions?

Sounds like they messed up the OEM plug or the pan threads. The pic below is a pic of a GM oil drain plug but gives you a idea of what a oil pan drain plug should look like(or similiar),it should be a shouldered bolt style with a gasket made of rubber, cooper, plastic,or fiber.

This is the stlye of drain plug on my KJ.

Here is some other versions of oil drain plugs.

Old style pan plug is an 8mm allen plug witha copper washer. New style is a normal metric size hex plug with a copper washer. Not good for you, oil pan is easily damaged without washer and is not cheap or easy to replace. Hope you can repair it.

Mine has a regular hex head bolt with washer, but then a real thick rubber washer. The threads feel good. I will order a new plug and washer tomorrow unless I can find a fumoto fast!

The Stock CRD oil drain plug is a 3/8" BSP Parallel thread plug with a copper washer.

I ordered a replacement from http://www.discounthydraulichose.com Part number 9028-06 BSPP Countersunk Sealed Plug $4.18 each
This part has a rubber seal built in, I used it WITH the copper washer and have no leaks. I took the plug in to NAPA to get a copper washer.

It doesn't measure anywhere close to 3/8 with my digital caliper???

Does anyone know for sure what size the plug is?

Pete

Ya that kind of through me as well. Close as I can tell the 3/8 rating is similiar to NPT fitting measurements, You've got 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 3/4 standard NPT fitting sizes, but try measuring a 3/8 NPT male screw in fitting, certainly not 3/8. Don't know where they get that measurement from either, but we all accept that 3/8 is 3/8 right.

I ordered the part number above, and I've been alternating that plug with the stock plug on every oil change. Except for the rubber gasket it is pretty much identical.

I think I'm going to drill and tap to 3/4 UNF and then put in a fumoto...

When Greg started offering the Fumoto valves for the CRD, he had adapters made because he couldn't identify the thread. He now sells a valve that fits without the adapter. If your pan threads are still good, that would be the easy way out.

---------------------------

If you buy the Fumoto f-102 from Gregg, it will be a PF 3/8 thread.
Here is what gets confusing. PF is Japanese call out for the British standard.
Overall diameter from chart above is 16.662 mm, which measures about
5/8 inch, not 3/8.
Isn't it great to have all the different standards thru out the world?

Steve

British Pipe, like American, is called based on the nominal diameter of the inside of the pipe. Even that is subject to change within a size because of the different schedules (wall thickness) of pipe. Plenty of confusion to go around. No waiting.

I put the metric plug back in with a new oil plug synthetic waher. It is now sealed with no leaks. Next oil change will be drill heli-coil and fumoto. Thanks for all the help.
