So, the story is that this guy took his ~6 mpg Hummer and doubled the mileage
by installing a diesel engine. A Duramax to be exact.
Forget his claims of more HP by using veggie oil. (debatable)
Or even claims of doubling mileage. (again, debatable, especially on this
forum)
Or his claimed $35K for the conversion. (maybe his cost, in a Hummer, but
can certainally be done for less)

The real story here is that diesel engines are more efficient.
And that Detroit should be putting diesel engines in more vehicles.

This is hardly NEWS.
This guy and the news media finally figured out what every TDI and 300D
owner figured out years ago.

Next they will be reporting how railroads are a much more efficient form of travel.

For a Duramax conversion that seems about right, even a bargin since there is more electronics to figure out then the 2.8 CRD engine has,not to mention the 6.6 is more $$$ and that Allison tranny isn't cheap either.Another magiazine put a 6.6 Duramax into a H3,I believe it ran about $100,000+ for that coversion.

Considering that the Duramax is rated for a 3/4ton+ trucks(up to a 7 1/2 ton rated Kodiak) it is very feaseable to get up to 20mpg+ from the swap into a 6000lbs SUV from a 8200lbs+ truck that get's 20mpg+ when empty.

When in Afganistan I could get about 350 miles from my H1(non-turbo 6.5 and 4lE80 tranny,16,000lbs) M1097A1 and still have about 4-5 gallons of JP8 left in the tank(25 gallon tank),that's 17mpg's at least from a 16,000lbs vehicle with a severly underpowered V-8 diesel(140HP,250lbs-ft of torque).

I agree. It almost seemed like ABC thought it had discovered a new type of engine or something.

Actually railroads are quite efficient. They can move 1 ton 428 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel!

Of course! They stuck it under the "Global Warming" section, so anything in there sensational has bound to get good publicity. Next, they'll be telling us that reducing the amount of air your vehicle pushes in front of it makes you get better fuel economy.

They're in fantasy land, much like many Americans would prefer to be. ABC == Disney

Yeah man, that GM 6.2/6.5 frickin' sucks. 17mpg is better than anything I
ever got in an old soft-top (old 3psd TH400). Yours UP-armored?
You need to get into a M113 and hear that 6V-53T wind up. :D

I agree that a D-max build would cost that much, but the story on TV didn't
mention specifically D-max. Quoting $35K doesn't exactly help promote
diesel engines either. Lots of other diesel swaps that can be done for less.

BTW, I drive a D-max at my current Unit. Hell of a lot better than the 6.2/6.5.

I saw a converted Escalade with the Duramax, he snapped of the left rear axle twice when he tried to drag race on the Discovery Channel. Better yet put in 3/4 ton running gear and a Allison to handle the torque.

Mine was "mad Max" up-armored,hence the extra 4000lbs of weight. The turbo versions(M1113 and M1114) had more power but at a high price,if you could keep the temp gauge at/below 240 degrees it was running "cold" .I was replacing the 6.5 turbo engines at a rate of 2 per week(average),and we only had 25 M1113's  .

That's perfect publicity. By promoting a H2 vegetable oil conversion for only $35k, no one in their right mind will even consider it. More vegetable oil for me. 8)

Boy there sure are alot of poeple "out of there minds" then, deisel coversion are becoming very popular,no matter the cost.If you can afford a H2 or a escalade another $20,000-$35,000 is not much to them.

I'm sure it's CARB approved!! I would be more interested in a smaller engine. The current group of pickup diesels are just too much. We need access to Europe's diesels. Screw the EPA.

:? Shakes head, no need to mention Diesel is roughly $1 higher than RUG, (when this time last year it was cheaper than RUG) partially thanks to China's surging demand.
WVO itself is becoming a comodity http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/30/us/30grease.html?_r=1&oref=slogin originally posted my vtdog.....
People will pay to $$$ convert their massive SUV's to diesel rather than give them up.

I'm going to be sick when the new diesel Honda sedans make it to the states and people line up for them only caring about the MPG sticker in the window.
Then I'll laugh when they fill their rice burners with gasoline by mistake.

LOL :-)r , What a load. He claims to have an H3 that gets 60mpg, and did you notice at the end of the article he says that he has a vehicle that gets 200mpg?

I think the guy is a total dildo. He's touting himself as being the "inventor" of the duramax H2 conversion. Since 2006, every year when we go to the SEMA show, there are tons of different companies with duramax h2 conversions etc. Worst part about owning a duramax hummer? It's a Hummer.

Actually it's an way over priced Taho in a very butt stupid ugly dress, not a real Hum Vee that makes our Military Proud.

The H2 is proof that Rosie O'D is not the only one with more money than brains.

I have full confidence that Dieseltoyz could do a Duramax/Allison conversion along with suspension components and brake upgrades on a Real Hum Vee that would make us all proud :!: :!: :!: :!:

The Real Hum Vee is overloaded with the life saving body armor and needs more power and beef in the right places, a Dieseltoyz upgrade would make it a very effective battle field weapon that would be safer for all who need to use it. :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

When the US Government obtains Deliverance from it's Post Birth Head in the Pelvic Area Syndrome, Dieseltoyz and other conversion shops will be developing Cost Effective Innovative Upgrades for the Military as they are doing fore their clients.

I saw that report also and couldn't help but chuckle at this "new" revalation. Heck diesel swaps have been around for at least 30 years using the old Detroit 53 series engines. But even funnier was that the reporter didn't seem to realize the diesel SUV's were already available and next year pretty much all the manufactureres will have them available in the US.

Well that depends. Are laser-guided turret guns and onboard SAM's really "optional"? i think not ;) We never have had any interest in H2's as they are just lame, poorly engineered bricks on a truck chassis that achieve horrible fuel economy. You can polish a turd but it's still a turd. I would rather use the gasser H2 with diesel prices these days. $35k and you're still getting poor fuel economy with the "added bonus" of higher diesel fuel prices. How in the hell does this guy sell this idea to people without downright lying to their faces?

I was making a point by bragging up your abilities and what could be done with the H1 a real Hummer, not the H2 that we have both put into it's place, the scrap pile
