For those of us not going to Big Bear, stupid work and gas prices!
How about a local run Saturday 6/21/08?
I have a couple ideas but am open to suggestions. Maybe Martinez Cabin, haven't been there in a while, a return trip to Sunflower, or:

The Gap

Haven't done that one since Fun in the Sun I. That's the one I vote for!

Beth and I are in depending on the trail you pick. I don't think we can do Sunflower in a stock height KJ from pictures some of the guys posted last winter. We've never done the Gap... how's that one for a stock height? From what I've read that could get tough too. Wells #69 rates it as difficult, lockers etc required.

I just put some more aggresive tires on the KJ than we had before and I'm itching to try them out. They are Toyo Open Country A/T's....

Stock KJ should be able to do the Sunflower mine but not the extended loop. The Gap is a difficult trail requiring a fully modified liberty and experience driver. Crown King is another trail suitable for stock vehicles with some alternate lines for more difficulty.

Hearing no other suggestions let's do Crown King. CK is suitable for stock liberty's, we've done it many times. We'll run the trail and have refreshments on the mountain before heading back down. I'll post meeting location and time tonight

Okay, I got the 'experienced' driver part down... it's the 'modified' part I keep having a problem with.

Crown King it is!!! It's been a few years since we last ran it, sounds like fun. Beth and I will be there, just need a start time and location. We'll most likely continue on to Prescott via the 'Senator Highway' and have dinner at a little Italian place we like. Of course everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy dinner with us after the run.

Well kind of short notice but I found out today that I don't have to work this weekend so if we can get a run together that quickly I could probably make it. If not I'll see what I can do to finagle the time off when it happens and use this weekend to put my gas tank skid on.

Who- You!
What- Crown King backway run (and mountaintop refreshments)
When- Saturday, 6/21/08 8 AM meet, 8:30 AM depart
Where- Intersection of Carefree highway and Castle Hot Springs Rd (near lake pleasant, not the other intersection way out west towards Wickenburg)

This is a fun trail, has something for everyone and it's cool on top!

Stock KJ's welcome, we've had many first timers run this trail with us in the past. There are also some alternate play areas for more experienced drivers and modified vehicles, but you don't have to.

There is a nice establishment on the mountain in Crown King where we'll have some tasty beverages in the cool mountain air afterwards.

Yay, the "Curse of Crown King" LIVES!!! :twisted:

You guessed it, got to work today and found out that they had upped the schedule for Saturday and now they need everyone to come in (instead of the volunteer situation that we thought it would be). So while you're out running the trail without me (again) please take a moment to think of me, cuz you know I'll be thinking of y'all :cry:

I think this is now the 4th or 5th time that I have NOT run this trail. At this rate I'll probably have my Jeep paid off before I ever make it up the hill...

What can I say... yet another fun run under our belt!!!

We met Vern and his friend Tom, at the trailhead, at 0800 sharp. Roll out was scheduled for 0830, but since nobody else signed on for the run, we got on the trail about 0820.

About 15 minutes into the trail, I see a shiney red 'Silver Diesel' closing in on us from behind!!! It was none other than our friend Rowland, who chased us down just to say hello and wish us Bon Voyage. He couldn't make the run with us because he had to work. He thought about calling in 'DEAD' so he could go with us, but said his boss would kill him for real come Monday morning. So Vern, Tom, Beth and I continued on our way while Rowland reluctantly turned around for home with his newly acquired 'got groceries?' decal.

The Crown King trail, which is rated difficult in the Wells book, lived up to it's rating, at least for my stock height KJ. We had done this trail several times over the years, the last time being three or four years ago and that was in the TJ.

Well, let me be the first to tell you, our stock height KJ was finally pushed to it's limit on the Crown King trail. I had a tough time not ripping something off from out under the KJ. I tried to pick the best lines to get through some tough spots, but in the end I got high centered and had to take the strap not once, but TWICE!!! Vern had to gently tug me up and over two ledges. Sorry, no pics, we had our hands full trying to get me up and over.

The trail had deteriorated a lot since the last time Beth and I were on it. Vern even said it had gotten a littler worse since he was on it last fall.

So, for future reference... a stock height KJ with good A/T tires, full skids and tow hooks can do the Crown King trail, but expect a few scraps and dents here and there.

The trail was 34 miles of slow going. It took us 8 1/2 hours to run it. We stopped twice for a total of about one hour. Once for lunch and another time, just to get out and stretch.

As I said at the begining of the post... it was a fun trip and Beth's daily driver was pushed to it's limits. We only wish more folks could of made the trip... maybe next time.

Here are a few pics I took along the way. Didn't have time to take many of the tough spots as the going was pretty rough and it was all I could do to stay behind Vern in his Rubicon Unlimited Wrangler....

What a day, had a great time! There is still a fair amount of water in the creeks and canyons, first time I've seen that. The mountain is beautiful!

Thanks to all that came along for making it so much fun. This trail has always been one of my favorites and it did not disappoint. It is beginning to test the limits of the stock liberty but with a patient driver it is fine. There is some scraping of skid plates underneath and you do need a good solid set of tires. AJ did a great job picking his line and patiently following it
Regarding the alleged straps I didn't see a thing. And I'm sure no one will bring up these pictures so I won't mention it either:

As I've said before there are only two kinds of four wheelers, those that have been strapped and those that will be.
