I can't imagine a Pete or Kenworth with a Cummins in it. Never thought I would see the day. Not that I like them all that much. It's not a good sign. EPA claims another.

While looking up EGR information I found that Cat had abandonded EGR because of the problems it causes :shock: I wonder if their resistance to using EGR had anything to do with their leaving the on road market :cry:

Doesn't bother me that CAT is getting out of trucks. CAT engines were not noted for getting great fuel mileage figures and they cost more over the life cycle statistically than DD and Cummins. They are great pulling engines, but cost more over the life cycle to do it.

man that sucks. I have grown up loving cats. My dad was a self employed cat mechanic for over 20 years. I strongly believe that a cat can be built to out perform almost any other motor out there. I have seen it done before quite a few times. it is truly a sad thing to see a great company quit making a great product.:cry:.

Cat owns Perkins Lock Stock Barrel
Navistar has been painting their engines Cat Yellow for years and Cat has been selling them through both Cat and Perkins.
Cat has Perkins paint their engines Cat Yellow and put on filters that won't go onto the regular Perkins engines.
Don't be surprised if Navistar comes up with a heavy duty over the road truck engine which passes the emissions regulations.
Cat can not produce enough engines in the smaller and medium sizes to keep up with their own demand, so why not buy smaller engines form Perkins (Who they Own) and Navistar :?:

Funny... I have never seen an International (Navistar) engine painted yellow, even the Ford Power Stroke which is made my Navistar. No.. I'm not surprised that Navistar has come up with an over the road truck engine that passes emissions regulations, and is staged to pass the 2010 standards as well.

Been out for a while and no, still not painted yellow. Maybe its just the web page. I learned about these new MaxForce engines over year ago. One of the side benefits of being in the transportation industry. Next we will learn that the DD engines are painted John Deere green because John Deere makes the blocks. Have hauled a lot of John Deere blocks to the DD plant in Michigan and still haven't seen a DD engine painted John Deere Green.

Cat's bread and butter is off-road equipment - engines for OTR trucks was less than 10% of their business.

And yes, the EPA and constantly changing emissions requirements did have something to do with that decision. Why spend tons of development and research money to meet emissions for a market segment that is a small fraction of your business - the ROI wasn't there.

The engine and truck manufacturers have burned thru billions of dollars in the past decade tring to keep up with the latest requirements from CARB/EPA. Daimler and DD alone spent 1 1/2 billion to develop the DD15 engine, which really has only two reasons for being - to meet 2010 emissions standards, and to try and recover some of the fuel economy lost complying with those standards.

And the truly asinine part of it is we have bureaucrats with CARB/EPA, who have no clue how a diesel even works, dictating to engineers what technology and methods they have to use to meet these standards.

In checking out the DD, seem that they are planning to do Urea injection for 2010 to really pull that off. Makes sense too. They can tone down the EGR and handle the NOx with urea and the particulate trap will take care of the soot. From what I can gather from DD, they are going to use a catalyst setup with the urea being injected into the catalyst, therefore taking care of NOx and CO. It will be interesting on how much Urea will need to be on board the typical road semi.

You are dead on with regarding the EPA. They have no idea about how a diesel is supposed to operate. But then, they don't care to and being a Government agency, there is no need for them to care.

I have high hopes for the DD engines though. From all appearances, they have built up an engine around the EPA crap as opposed to taking a traditional diesel and adding on junk to try and make it compliant.

Cowpie: The Cat Yellow Navistar 466CID engines I have seen are mostly on Cat Gensets used for standby power.
Cat getting out of the ORT market may be a combination of EPA and having a shortage of production capacity for their own needs for off road equipment.
