I recently had Inmotion Tuning Flash my PCM, which DID improve my mileage ~10%. He mentioned that that the SUNCOAST T/C swap will show some milage improvement too. My present T//C seems to work fine so I can't see how a suncoast would help, BUT with diesel at $4.99 I'm loooking at all options. Has anyone noticed a fuel milage improvement after the swap?

Call Mr Moparts on-line, tell him you need the transmission pump and cover for the Liberty CRD 545RFE transmission - he'll ask for your VIN - he'll pull up the build sheet for your KJ, with all the p\n's that went into the vehicle on the production line - if your KJ has the original pump, he'll inform you that you need a revised pump, as the original is not available - if it has the revised pump, he'll just give you the part number and price - that's the beauty of ordering parts based on a VIN

I have been agonizing over this, fish or cut bait, fish or cut bait.

Thanks, when I become ruler of the universe I will toss a tasty wench or two your way.

Ok, for the 545RFE tranny:

The pump in my '06 is 05******AD

The listing on Sir Sam's Manual's Site says for an '07 68009879AA.

The latest Mr. Mopartsamerica # is 68009879AB. for $197.73 plus shipping.

So as soon as I get some pennies scraped up I will send for the new rascal. In the mean time a new gasket, filters, oil +4, say it again, +4 ATFluid must be assembled in addition to the new transmission cooler with bypass switches and hoses, oh, my.

I have a list on my favorites of parts suppliers.
Some have specialties, some general, some brand specific, etc.
If I say go to joeblow.com and you get burned, I look bad and you are mad at me, nobody is happy.
Your VIN is a guide to the build of your machine when built.
Changes, repairs, recalls, idiot repairs can happen.
Have you asked a dealer for a build sheet yet?
That will tell you recalls that have been done or not.
Go from there, good luck.

Ordered the new pump today for $217.50 shipping included.

Boy I know the Fed says there is no inflation but either my kids are eating me out of house and home or my kids are eating the money, actually, well, both probably.

Ok, for now the aux transmission cooling unit, and bypass valves:
Should I put it behind the fan, in the radiator pile?
How about a bigger capacity unit, no fan, out front a bit of the fan?
I live up north so the bypass valves are probably required when the nuts clatter like a diesel from cold.

Wow, Thanks Bill,

Mighty fine workmanship. Your presentation is spectacular, especially the colored temperature display of the results of the cooler at work.
I was looking at the grill and there is not much room. If the front was a little more aerodynamic, say if the grill had a greater slope, there would be more room.
Reminds me of when I made my MGA look like a Shelby AC Cobra with a piece of aluminum and fiberglass back in the 70's.
Where I live and the way the roads are would not support a down low installation like you have. I was up to the frame in mud this spring on the road we live on!!! That cooler would have been at least buried in mud and maybe even crushed.
You have me thinking Bill, I appreciate your fine work.

If you use the DeRaille style, with it's own fan (available a summitracingdotcom or buildyerown), you can place the heat exchanger back under the vehicle where there is more room - do a search and look at Retmil46's install

New design pump is the same one that goes into the 68RE behind a Dodge Cummins - only difference is the seals and cover. If it's stout enough to put behind a Cummins.....

Both my local tranny god and Ron Wolverton felt that the new design pump was enough of an improvement over the old design to warrant spending the bucks on it and swapping it out if the opportunity presented itself.

At least on U.S. versions, the factory tranny cooler is actually a combo unit that is half tranny cooler and half A/C condenser - and not up to the job of doing both in hot weather and hard driving. An aux tranny cooler will give you two benefits - cooler tranny fluid and a happy tranny, plus colder A/C output and happy occupants!

Retmil46,

Gmctd suggested I do a search of your cooler, so...... Do you know you have 109 pages of posts? I got to page 17.
Please let me know how you did it and are you happy with the way it works..

Now DeRaille style was the brand I looked at and spaced out....information overload..Do I need more fans and wires???
Why not a big radiator out in the air, but when stuck in traffic, worst case, hauling the Airstream in Phoenix at 110 stopped in traffic....
Ok, will the other systems, A/C and engine cooling, start to fail too? Should I beef them all at once? Can I make this simpler?
Bigger radiator with built in tranny cooler and be done? Do it right, do it once...

I picked this up on another thread, copied and pasted it here. Thanks Gmctd. More good information to sift through.

I didn't see anything to indicate that function, but ECM does use the Inlet Fuel Temp sensor to modify 545 pressures, shift ranges, and TCC lockup - fewer gears the colder it gets.

However, B&M and Hayden and DeRaille offer temperature-controlled bypass valves for external cooler applications.

This is the first choice, so far, it is large and the hotter it gets the better trans fluid flows through it.
Fin and plate design, should be tough enough.
The thermal bypass will keep the fluid out under 180F.
I would like to separate the transmission from the engine coolant radiator to be able to increase radiator capacity.
However, it might be better to stay tied into the radiator to warm the tranny in the winter, might have to experiment to be sure.

Called a regional Tranny shop and they recommended just about the same cooler I came up with only they wanted $250 versus the $140+ I paid.
I want to go separate coolers so the new parts get their own new cooler with the thermal bypass.
Can always put it back in with the radiator later if necessary.
New gasket, filters, ATF+4 next and then I schedule the install.

Adding to the potential "while I have my wallet open for the Suncoast Project" to do list;

what about new Universal Joints while the tranny is out .... like greaseable heavy duty ones? Any merit to this upgrade?

If so, which ones?

Fastrob,

The tranny cooler install I did is not really low... certainly above the frame. You would have mud up to the doors to clog this install location.... it is tucked away very nicely away from harm. the tranny cooler is right up against the bottom of the charge cooler.
I have noticed, now that it has been in for a while, that it gets what seems to be good air flow, even at idle. The engine fan has a shroud the pulls air thru the engine radiator . BUT there is a gap of about 0.75 inches betwwen the radiator and the charge air cooler... so the path of least resistance for the air is through the opening at the bottom, where I have placed the aux tranny cooler.... how handy is that! At idle, at least, air is pulled up through my tranny cooler, then proceeds throught the radiator.

Also.... I did some off road mudding recently, and the tranny cooler was left dirty, but not clogged.

So... in summary, I think the long tranny cooler gets parasitic airflow from the engine fan, and is well protected from muddy nastyness.

Bill

Tjkj2002 has on his signature that 760 u joints are stronger, cheaper than cv shafts.
When the shafts are off why not check them out? Replace with good greasable u joints if worn
I replaced my ball joints with Moog even though under recall because the replacement stock stuff was junk.
