Hello all, I'm new to these forums and have been lurking for a couple weeks. I live in Iowa right now and have never done any true off-roading but I'm really hoping to start. Everything on these forums I hear has been really friendly and helpful so I thought I'd chime in with my vacation plans.

My wife and I will be taking my stock '06 Renny on a road trip the first week of Sept down to the Phoenix area. We'll be staying with some friends in Maricopa from late Sat (Aug 30) through mid Sat (Sept 6). Would anybody be up for showing us some trails sometime during that Labor Day week? I've seen some pics and reviews of the trails down there and I'm excited to go but I figured it's probably not a good idea to go out wheeling on my own my first time out (or ever). Anybody able to show me something other than scenic roads?

Probably. Keep posting as it gets closer. I'm sure someone will be in town and up for a run. We have an area fairly close at Saguaro Lake (aka Butcher ones, the Rolls). It's a lot of fun!

Yeah we should have some folks that can help out. Might want to post up what armor/mods you have (if any) so people have a better idea of what you can handle. There are some nice places to go but you really want to at least have scrape plates 8)

x2... we're always up for a run. Keep us posted as to your plans and we'll see what we can put together while your're here.

Just a note... most trails you'll need good tires, full skids and tow hooks.

And welcome!!!

We might be in town that weekend as well. If so, I'm down for some scenic off-roading :)

Thanks all for your replies. I've got a stock '06 Renegade with rock bars and tow hooks but no skids. I do plan to add the skids before coming down but I'm not sure I'll be able to afford the tires. I may be stuck with the crappy stock 225/75s but I'm hoping to get a set of 245/70 Destination A/Ts (if the boss/wife lets me spend that much). I'll keep everybody updated as plans finalize.

Hey, just finalized plans for our trip down there and wanted to see if anybody was gonna be available to show us a trail or two. We'll be arriving in phoenix late Saturday (Aug 30) and we'll be there til Thursday (Sep 4). Anybody who's interested in getting off the pavement please let me know or feel free to suggest some trails to go have fun at.

I have plans for that Saturday but Sunday and Monday are both open. Anyone wanna go with me and show them some trails, maybe Box Canyon in FJ or BCH? Sedona is always good, probably crowded with all the folks up for the holiday but then it usually is on the weekend so who can tell the difference :?

Oh, just so we know - did you get the skid plates installed? That 'll help determine where we can take you :D

I did get full skids but didn't have the $ to do anything with a lift or tires.

Any details and pics of some places to go would be cool too. Might be good to see some of the places you're talking about ahead of time.

Monday might be better for us just cause we'll get down there pretty late Saturday but if we can get more people on Sunday that's fine too.

Also, if it's of any difference, we'll actually be down in Maricopa.

thanks for the pix phxtoad. Right now it sounds like Sunday is the better day to go so we'll plan for a Sunday afternoon trip. Somebody name the time and place so we can finalize that. Also if you could give me some directions to the place, or just a google maps link would be great. Sounds like the list of people is:

1. Joe C Renegade
2. corwyyn
3. AZKJ
4.

any more takers?

I might be up for this trip if I can get my Gas Skid installed prior to Sunday.

Yeah, I'm in. Were you interested in doing the Coves/Saguaro Lake thing then? If so here is a map I did last year for another gathering. The main area at Butcher Jones is a fee area, but if you are going straight thru to the Rolls/Coves off-road section you do not need to pick up a permit. Also if you park in the first parking spot (before you get to the split in the road and the old fee pay station) then you do not need a permit - if anyone asks just tell them you are waiting for some other folk then you are going out to the coves.

I'll be up and about any time after 10am (earlier if needed but I resemble Oscar the Grouch :P ). I'll keep checking back for a time.

If you are interested in doing something on Monday as well there is a light-duty trail out by Maricopa I have been meaning to get to - it is a section of the old Butterfield Stage route from Missouri to California. Here is a link to a write-up on it.

Unless there's any objections, we'll plan for Coves/Saguaro Lake, Sunday at 12:00. Meet at the first parking spot, the one marked as "Another meeting spot" on the google map.

Also, I saw that write up on the butterfield stage route a while back. Looks pretty good and I'd be interested in trying that out Monday. We'll play it by ear for that.

Looks like Butterfield Stage Route is a 'no go'. http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/info/nepa/environmental_library/sdnm_temporary_closure.html

Aw well, it'll probably be better to wait until winter to do that one anyway. OK I'll be at the parking lot for the coves run at high noon. 8)
