The Dodge Caliber is not an SUV. It is a hatchback.

Regardless, the compass and patriotare both being built upon this platform. Don't expect to see a trail rated badge on either of them.

Who cares? Jeep's gotta start building non-niche vehicles to keep makin money, (and off road vehicles) and the Liberty was the first in the long line that's yet to come.

look at it this way: it's just like Porsche building an SUV. they did it so they could afford to keep building fast cars. the end justifies the means.

Too bad Jeep has to go the way of the Land Rover and Range Rover and Toyota and Suzuki and Hummer and...

Range Rover is a model in the Land Rover lineup:P and Land Rover also still has the old stand-by Defender in their lineup, solid axles and all (in the UK). Jeep will never NOT have an SFA rig in their lineup, because that'll kill the halo effect. everybody at one time has wanted a traditional Jeep (open top, option of going doorless, 4wd, rides like a log truck), and that's what keeps people coming into the showroom...and then they decide "this thing sucks driving on pavement, let's get a liberty/grand cherokee/whatever") it's part of evolution...evolve so more poeple buy your stuff, or your company/division goes down the crapper. look at IH's line of light trucks (scout, travelall, et al) where are they now? point taken? good.

We talk to Jeep all the time...they(engineers) constantly fight corporate on phasing out the Wrangler. Pretty soon, the TJ ( or whatever the next one is) won't meet DOT standards for crash safety and it'll be all over. That sux, but hey, it's the way things evolve...I wanted an XJ the year I bought my KJ, but they quit making them. Life goes on, and I learned about IFS. You just need to evolve with em and it'll be ok.

To put the Jeep name on something like that is a darn disgrace!

You guys should check out http://www.allpar.com some time to get the real story. Learn stuff like the Liberty was designed with a better IFS, but the money guys canned it. And that Jeeps had station wagon type vehicles..... Grand Wagoneer anyone? Jeeps will still be the most capable on and off road vehicles from the factory, even if they have IFS, leather, dvd players, and 3 zone climate control. Go to JU if you want to bash the new Jeeps as non-Jeeps.

The Wrangler won't be exatly the same, but it will still have an open top a la targa top.

I suppose eventually there will come a day when a vehicle like the Wrangler will no longer be produced. Maybe because of the lower cost of vehicles that are street-worthy and comfortable, rough and rowdy won't cut it. Guess that might explain the growth of the ATV/quad market... people want offroad, affordable fun. As much as I loved my TJ's... the Liberty fits my daily needs better... and the reason I'd like to eventually get myself a quad to play with in the woods.

I've read everything they have about the Liberty, and 99% of it is stupid trash talking garbage. I'll give you the "stronger front suspension" thing, but some of those idiots (like that guy that talks about how the XJ uses space more efficiently than a KJ-WTF??) should have their fingers sewn together to avoid making this uneducated dribble so available on the internet. Yep, J trucks are superior trucks...that's why they didn't sell (and no, i'm not bashing fullsize jeeps). morons.

Everybody thinks their vehicle is the best be a chevy, dodge, ford, hummer, or Jeep whatever. Thats how it is. expect trash talk from every person into cars, trucks, or whatever. We just happen to be right. I AM bashing every 4x4 on the market because the KJ is the best vehicle for what I need.
