I've had a similar noise i've been dealing with for the past 6 months. I found that the rear bolt for my pass side upper a/arm was not torqued properly. This started making noise about 6mo. after i had the lift on. I was ready to tear the strut apart but found this bolt first. I snugged it up and the noise is gone. just a thought.

i had my left front strut top nut come off two times in one year. i drove from las vegas to big bear for the 2008 run, no sound or handling issues. once i got off road i knew what happen right away. i dropped it off at quinn's shop on saturday, had fun at the bbq, and sunday morning quinn fixed it again. great shop, great people! i don't think it's coming off any time soon. quinn mushroomed the top of the threads with a hammer and welded the nut!

so how the heck are you gonna get the thing off and out if you have to replace it? guess you're gonna have to cut it.

I guess if you need to get it off again it will be to replace the shock so it wont matter if you cut the bolt off the top.

After youve had that front suspension apart as many times as some of us rangerd its an art. I myself am sick of taking that thing apart and Im sure members on here have done it many more times than I have. :)

sick of taking it apart, heck its fun any more!
I had mine completely apart and back together 4 times in 3 days trying out other systems/ setups, after a while I go under mine with a jack and parts just start falling off!

Interesting thread. I've had my Rusty's full lift in for 55k miles and about 4 years so so. over the last year, I've started hearing a creak/clunking noise when I hit a bump, often while turning right (noise seems to be on the left side). I had my mechanic install the lift years ago, and last year he tried to trace down this noise. he could only hear it while driving. He was NEVER able to recreate it in the shop. He installed my Al's A arms, so he checked those over to make sure they're in tightly. All seems good.

So, what exactly is in the upper strut assembly that can be worn out? A bushing? If it fails, what happens?

The other item people had, if I read and understood, is the nut on the top fo the strut is backing off? So what happens, on full drop the strut comes out?

Please explain, AND MAYBE add pics!!!

TIA.

Clint and Wally (and one more whom I forget, sorry) installed my lift 3 years ago in the mud, rain and cold at Moab and it's been problem free! The only suspension noise I get from the front is the creaky sway bar bushings and the occasional contact between my sway bar and my LCAs (strange, I know, but it's done it for a long, long time, they're even both dented a tiny bit.)

Now my swinggate is noisy as an ammo can full of nails on a C-130, but that's off topic.

After reading all this though I think I'll take a look at my struts just to be sure they stay problem free.

I think that's the secret to a good install: do it wet! It keeps everything well lubed for life

Can one tell if the strut nuts are backing out without partially removing them? What's the best way to check them?

within the last month. offroad, over bumps on gravel roads, or on bumpy trails, something in my front suspension has a "for sure up/down", (NOT side to side or steering related) rattle/banging noise. i torqued all supension bolts to spec. i have no clue what else it would be? the only thing i narrowed it down to was the upper strut nut or the top plate bushing assembly.

i had hatu(dave) in the passenger seat this weekend, and he heard it as well.

if i take it apart, im getting jeepin by al's 1/4" internal spacers above the spring, because im going to be getting the ARB bumper by spring time. i have the OME HD's springs, if i get a winch later on, ill get the diesel 790 springs. but for just the arb bumper, i should be ok with the OME HD's and the 1/4" spacer

you'll be OK with just what you have now, the HDs are made for the bumper , mines as high as a Frankenlift with the bumper, why put the spacers in if you don't really need them, also from what I read on there it increases the lbs per square so you would have 525 lb springs or something stupid like that ( using the HDs and that chunk of steel)

very odd...i've done almost 40xxx with my rusty's full suspension lift and just have very squeaky and shot shocks. If i go over speed bumps a little quicker than normal i hear the loud thud, but i believe thats the tires slapping back down on the pavement...not metal to metal contact. I'll have them look over the suspension assembly when i get the ranchos installed...and since we're on the rusty's suspension topic...anyone know how long the rusty's coils will typically last before they start to sag?
